Our next Field Meeting is this Saturday June 13 0930 at the Ashcott Corner car park for Meare Heath and/or adjacent sites. We have two very experienced leaders in Alison Everett and Jeff Hazell and new and prospective members are especially welcome. This is a quality venue which is certain to produce something good.
13-Jun-15
After a start beset by just a light drizzle, the eleven of us enjoyed a good 3.5 hrs of birding: firstly along the main track passing Meare Heath until opposite Noah’s Lake on Shapwick Heath; then, retracing our steps, on to Ham Wall as far as the first viewing platform. We recorded a total of 53 species including the areas ‘top four’: Great White Egret (2), Bittern (7), Marsh Harrier (5) and Hobby (2), and were also rewarded with 3 fly-over Red Kites, including 2 together. Apart from the usual warbler species, other birds of note were Common Tern, Redshank and Bullfinch, and a lucky few saw 2 female Adders near the old railway bridge on Ham Wall.
