Catcott Lows

Late afternoon visit; Some surface water now showing but a lot of vegetation obscures most of what might be present!! Birds seen were, 1 male Pintail; at least 100 Wigeon; a dozen Teal; one pair of Shoveller, one pair of Gadwall and 2 pairs of Mallard with approx 20 Lapwing. A couple of inches of rain will improve visibility!

Re: Catcott Lows

This morning, 23 golden plover which moved off southwards when spooked and didn't return before we left. Two marsh harriers hunting the area, the usual duck species, stonechats, meadow pipits, snipe, lapwing and my first fieldfare flock of the autumn.

Re: Catcott Lows

Catcott for lunch, just a few duck which included 2 M and 1 F Pintail plus 50 Lapwing and distant views of Marsh Harrier and Peregrine. Then at 1355 a large Fem Peregrine dived in amongst the startled bird flock and knocked a tardy Lapwing down into the standing water, it circled twice and at the second attempt retrieved the struggling Lapwing from the water and carried it to the far end of the reserve and plucked it. It moved off carrying it's prey and disapeared only to return flying past the hide still carrying the Lapwing's corpse an hour later at 1505 heading west.
