Hodders Coombe

Walked the entire length of Hodders Coombe today, at least 8 Wood Warblers, one pair making feeding runs also 3 pairs Grey Wagtails, again one pair in the process of feeding young, 12 Pied Flycatchers, 3 pairs feeding, two broods were nest bound, one lot had flown & were lining up on branches, one Spotted Flycatcher. Watched a Jay chase / hunt down what looked like a young Robin, forcing it to the ground whereupon it killed it, then took it high up into a nearby tree & plucked it. I decided to change over from binos to scope to get a better look in which time the Jay must have flown off.
6 hours, NO Redstarts, have not seen one this year yet

Re: Hodders Coombe

Strangely enough i walked up Holford coombe last month and there were many redstarts, whilst only a couple of pairs of pied flycatchers.

Re: Hodders Coombe

I was there last Wednesday and had 3 Wood Warblers, a pair of Redstart, one spotted Fly but no Pied Flys at all! Just shows that there is a lot of luck about what you see on any given day.
