Serin flying visit

A Serin made a flying visit into friends kitchen in Yeovil it stayed just long enough for a photocall but it has three ringswhich appear to be blue over pink on one leg black on the other.Would this have been ringed locally.

Re: Serin flying visit

Hi Ian,,
According to the BTO ringing records only 29 Serin have been ringed (i.e. as wild birds) in the UK since 1909 and in the last 5 yrs only 4 have been ringed. As far as I can see there are no colour ringing schemes for this species certainly not in the UK. I suspect this was a captive bred ringed bird probably ringed as a pullus using closed rings .(i.e. no split mark in the ring) You might be able to see this detail if the bird was photographed from close range

Re: Serin flying visit

Sounds more likely a Canary which could well be colour ringed

Re: Serin flying visit

Many thanks Alan for reply to my question on serin ringing.
