At 1258 this morning 11 Common Cranes passed high over Meare Heath in Vee formation heading N.W. towards Draycott Sleights on the Mendips. They were circling for 5 mins. presumably to gain height, between Rodney Stoke and Draycott and were lost to view still apparently heading north at 1310.
I have just found out that these cranes were part of the Great Crane Project(no surprise there) and were on their way to Slimbridge.
There are now 14 birds at Slimbridge - one unringed I believe and still over 50 (all ringed) in Somerset.
I've just returned from Germany and the Cranes coming to roost in their 10's of thousands on the Brandenburg plains. Something I hope that my grandchildren will witness - in the future - on the Somerset levels.
