Shapwick Heath - 9 August 2013 (morning)

Good weather conditions - dry, bright, cloudy with sunny intervals and a light-fresh Westerly breeze.

1 (possibly 2) Hobbies (both 2cy individuals) - one seen flying low over Meare Heath. Later one perched on a dead tree at the edge of Meare Heath for about 30 minutes, preening lightly.

2 Peregrine - a male (probably juvenile) soared up very high above Meare Heath and moved Eastwards. Later, a juvenile female circled around above Noah's Lake and drifted South.

1 Kestrel - hover-hunting above Meare Heath.

1 Sparrowhawk - adult male soaring low near Ashcott Corner Car Park.

Marsh Harrier - several sightings.

12+ Common Buzzard- soaring singles and groups of up to 3 hawks. A pale morph juvenile (same bird as seen last month?) loafing around in the top dead branches of an Oak tree being mobbed by 2 Carrion Crows.

Also:

3 Great White Egret - all on Noah's Lake.
2 Bittern - both flying (and calling) closeby.
1 Greenshank - flew around Noah's Lake looking for a place to land but failed, rose up and flew off towards Meare Heath.
2 Green Sandpiper - flying West above Noah's Lake
6 Lapwing
8 Little Egret
2+ Sand Martin
15+ Barn Swallow
35+ Common Swift
2 Raven - landed on a dead tree at the edge of Noah's Lake and remained there for 30 minutes.
2 Great Spotted Woodpecker
1 Cetti's Warbler
1 Jay - imitating a Buzzard calling.
