War in the Horn of Africa appears imminent. If large-scale violence breaks out, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia and the Bush administration will bear major responsibility for the ensuing chaos and human suffering...

This article is well written and to the point. Ladies and gentlemen, if you saw the video of some Islam fundamentalists killing christians in Jimma, Ethiopia, who refused to become muslim (Staring Meles Zenawi and the Agazi Band), then don't miss the next video to be released soon (Scene: Eastern Ethiopia and Southern Somalia). Meles Zenawi knows no shame.

Dear Shama Bure and AFDists,
You two are like the blind crowl that fly around not knowing where to land. We told you that OLF has no place in what it calls "Fake Ethiopia" as quoted by AFDist himself. Forget these OLF and AFD traitors. They are Shaabyia boot-lickers and cannot say more than what they are told by Shaabyia. Weather they accept it or not the brunt of the war is being fought by our galant Oromo brothers and sisters. Let the OLFists and AFDists sit here in Diaspora and continue their day dreams. They are absolutely good for nothing and we do not need to pay attention to their traitor propaganda ploy. today. Leave this matter for us Ethiopians to work it out.

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
I listened to Melese's interview to his parliament and the sending of his soldiers to Baidoa according to him is because of a threat of war by the Islamists.
According to this argument we could have seen war throughout the world, because there are many neighboring countries who have antagonistic relationship.
It seems that this guy has lost his mind after his humilation in Brussels and he has to fight Isayas who is the supporter of the Islamists not over Badme but on Baidoa.
USA contracting of Melsese's army is not a sercret and his total victory over Islamists will guarantee a life hold on his present job.
A stalemate is not acceptable and a man who sacrificed thousands of our young over Badme will send thousands more to their death.
State tuned for the next war to finish all of us who did not support this adventure.

Dear Ye Keshim Arif,
Don't worry. We don't need sissy OLFists and AFD traitors. Worry about your master Shaabiya. We are not boot-lickers like you and if traitors feel sorry who cares? Ethiopia has over 70 million sons and daughters who shall defend her sovereign state. This is a time of challenge. So forget about your wishful thinking while sitting in Diaspora. If wishes were horses, you would have created a castle in Oromia but in vain. This is the time when each one of us is on a litmus test as regards Ethiopia's sovereign state. It is time to examine who is who. It is time to put our differences aside for a while and gather together to save Ethiopia from enemies that have embarked in Somalia to wage Islamic Jihad. At this war we are facing fundamentalists that have come all the way from Syria, Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, Libya and Lebanon. We are fighting against Eritrea and its bootlicking home grown terrorists like ONLF, OLF, SPLF and the likes.
Forget about your wishful thinking while sitting in Diaspora. If wishes were horses, you would have created a castle in Oromia but in vain. This is the time when each one of us is on a litmus test as regards Ethiopia's sovereign state. It is time to examine who is who. This is not the time for us to sit down and lament while Ethiopia is at bay from all fronts. Nor is it time for us to sit and to talk about OLF, AFD, CUD and the likes. As Ethiopia's mere existence is being challenged by Islamist Jihad of Somalia we must stand besides the Transitional Government of Somalia and the Government of Somaliland and fight against not only Islamist Jihad of Somalia but also traitors like ONLF, OLF, AFD, EPPF and other traitor groups and shabby Shaabyia bootlickers who support the Islamic Jihadists of Mogadishu.
It is time for pro-Ethiopia groups to get rid of the twin enemies in a single battle field inside Somalia once and for all. We shall come out victorious.

Meles will never shy away to use the people of Ethiopia as a condom once again as he did in Badmie to buy more time for his crumbling mafia empire.
Meles and the Woyanies will serve any one who can pay them. Meles served Issaias, Siad Barre and now the Americans.
The first step he did was remove the non-Tigrayan officers through purge and install all officers in the army with Tigraians. The second step will be herding the non-Tigraian foot soldiers to Somalia like cattle.

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
Dear Ethiopians.
Those who are mad and totally halucinated pathological killers are going to take our mother country Ethiopia to a complete madness of warfare and distruction.
When the war they madly ignite starts burning, there may not be any way of extinguishing the spiraling violence. The Ethiopian people will surely be reduced to untold catastrophic miseries and unbelievable dehumaniztions, even that if only spared from sure death.
Who likes his/her country and people already wretched poor to be exterminated by wanton and reckless killer dictators. The Ethiopian dictators are planning to pay the Ethiopian people in kind for their categorical rejection of the TPLF dictatorship and electing for democracy.
If you want to know as to what our country Ethiopia may look like if the TPLF aggression inginites the war, just watch Iraq and Afghanistan very carefully every single day. Those countries have been converted in to merciless and brutal killing fields over which no one has any control. Simply put, they are concrete and exact replica of the Vietnamese war. Who would like to convert mother Ethiopia in to the bastion of terror and modern day human slaughter house?
For the Bush administration who is dreaming to take home a small sample of victory before leaving office, the possibly unfolding human tragedy may only mean a nominal dear hunting venture in the wilderness of the Horn. For the TPLF and its cadres, they are already used to blood and the killing and more killings may only sataisfy their pathological yearning for human distruction. We must unite and resist unjust war and unjust invasion and save our people from dogs gone MAD.

Here we go again. The OLF-hooligans are conversing their good old tribal diatribe. They are like a blind bird flying high on the sky not knowing where to land eventually. On the one hand they tell us that they are not Ethiopians and work as hand and gloves with Shaabiya and Al-Qaeda. On the other hand they join Ethiopians and try to comment on this or that issue.
We say to them that OLFits and AFDists are traitors and bandits who have no place on Ethiopian affairs.
But they keep on mumbling this or that opinion like a 2-years old baby.
What are these bloody OLF-traitors talking about? They have no place in Ethiopia anymore; nor do we need their opinion. They can go and share their wicked thoughts with Shaabiya. We Ethiopians for one are moving ahead weather they like it or not with our galant Oromos taking the lead at the battle field.

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
Another Big, Big lie: I followed the link the writer cited for the US list of terrorists to include TPLF some time ago. The following is what I fished out.
Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF)
Aliases: Tigrai Peoples Liberation Front
Base of Operation: Ethiopia
Founding Philosophy: The Tigray movement, also known as Weyane, began in the mid 1970’s as opposition to the Mengistu dictatorship in Addis Ababa. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was formed in early 1975 by members of a previous organization, the Tigray Liberation Organization that came under the influence of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF). The TPLF’s goals included the overthrow of the Dergue regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam and the establishment of a more democratic, inclusive government for Ethiopia. Their ideology was communist, following an Albanian model. Although the group was based out of Tigray and was comprised of almost all Tigrayan peoples, they fought in the name of all groups that opposed Menigstu. Their largest offensive against Ethiopian forces was in February 1988, and by May 1989 the Ethiopian Army had completely pulled out of Tigray.
Despite the EPLF’s goal of Eritrean independence, contrasted with the TPLF’s goal of political change within Ethiopia, the two groups had close contacts throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, helped by EPLF raids on Derg bases within Tigray. Differences regarding the territorial boundaries of Tigray and Eritrea, however, eventually led to a split between the two groups.
Current Goals: In 1989 the TPLF formed an alliance with the Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (EPDM) and formed the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), which claimed to fight for the rights of all oppressed nationalities, civil rights, and a genuine people’s government. In 1991, the EPRDF succeeded in overthrowing the Menigstu regime, and took control of the Ethiopian government.
A split developed within the TPLF in the early 1990’s, based on debates between “moderate” and “hard-line” members of the group. Party leader and Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was a moderate and favored the adoption of market-based economic principles and privatization. Opposition from hard-line communists in the group led to an attempted, yet unsuccessful coup in March 2001. The TPLF-dominated EPRDF continues to hold power in Ethiopia.

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
The author offers nothing substansive except his repetitive name calling and obvious hate for EPRDF. In fact the writing is full of deliberate misleadings and factual errors. At one point, he alleges that the US once labeled ERDF a terrorist group and he gives a link to "database of terrorist organizations" to support his claim. Obviously, he was assuming that people will take his accusation on face value and that they will neber actually check out the link. Well, I did and there is nothing, absolutely nothing close to his wild statement that the US classified the TPLF as a terrorist group. If anything, the the cited writing has some nice things to say about TPLF. People like the presnt author, in their desperation to sell their unfounded hate for EPRDF write anything that would tarnish the image of the government. They often fail to realize that people are much smarter than they think. The author and his likes will only reinforce the belief that they are desperate and their tiring shriek is only that and nothing more. The forces that they counted on to somehow help them get the state power they lost are about to be decimated and this, my friends, is what is causing all these desperation.

As far as those of us who belong to the pro-Ethiopia camp are concerned we are determined to stand against the known enemies of Ethiopia. Who cares for a dead fish? No one cares except the scavenger. Compatriots:
The best way to defeat this propaganda is to refuse to state nothing else other than reporting or commenting as it should be by linking it with TPLF regime's desperate act to use religion to continue raping the nation. It is nothing other than a cover up for ongoing human rights violation by the minority based ethno dictatorship. We will need to tell one another in these terms and making sure that every Ethiopian passes the same message to the next one. That would cripple the agents of killing who are out to use Somalia as a pretext to destroy Ethiopia's culture of tolerance. TPLF leadership was protected in Somalia, used all the facilities and the current Somali factions were their ideological soulmates not very long ago. Therefore, only a few fools would fall into TPLF's entrapments!
Let us do what we are more than capable of: Let us not be TPLF's audience, but instead reach out to our people with the facts behind the repressive killer regime's invasion of Somalia. Democracy and ethnic cards were exposed. TPLF shouldn't be given a green light to use religious excuse to prolong our people's agony!

Meles is not scared of the ICU. Meles is scared because the ICU somalia leave its border open for the OLF and ONLF insurgents as a spring board to attack his regime.
Meles blocked all the borders of Sudan, Kenia, Djibuti by making alliance with the governments of those countries. But the ICU of somalian won't be complying to this so he forsaw insergency in that direction and wanted to kill it from its bud.

Dear Tassew Abacheflik,
No don't cry no more. It is a wonderful day in Addis!
At 8:30 am today, an estimated 25 000 people gathered in Meskel Square to participate in the annual Great Ethiopian Run. However, almost immediately after the race began, the crowd seized the long-awaited opportunity to peacefully protest and make known the famous Civil Disobedience introduced by Andargachew Tsege soon after the May 2005 election was over. The crowd was demanding Meles Zenawi to order the immediate release of all political prisoners. Shouts of “Kinijit is back!” AFD and OLF supporters were specially mingled with slogans denouncing the anticipated invasion in Somalia, and strains of peaceful hymns filled the air. Local police officers looked on in amazement as crowds swarmed the front of the ETV building, peacefully expressing their dissatisfaction and thanking Andargachew Tsege for initiating Civil Disobedience.

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
Dear all,
The Ethiopian opposition saga at least those of the vociferous and scandalous Diaspora, whose economic and material contribution created crisis during the election 2005, looks definitely to go toward its end. This was the type of “support group”, “task force”, “intellectuals”, fanning hatred and discord among Ethiopians using radio stations and meetings, collecting huge amount of money to help ascend “yegna sewotch or our people” to power and lobbying politicians in many countries not to cancel debt, give aid or credit to the poor in Ethiopia as well as aspersing politicians or using violence against other Diaspora Ethiopians. Strangely, this shameful and disgruntled group has gone so far as to impose sanctions by the so-called H.R. 5680 “Ethiopia Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights Advancement Act of 2006” by inviting congressmen of the USA to pass this bill and interfere in the internal affairs of Ethiopia as if the country were under the colonial rule of the US. The turn of events before and after the current election in the US, however, has shown that this bill looking to the traditions of the US foreign policy does not belong its priority area.
While the Diaspora community in many countries such as India, China, Italy, etc. played or plays a big role in the development of their countries, some Ethiopians still remain in their primitive and violent culture of disseminating rabid hate and ill will, despite their years of stay and exposure to the civilized and democratic traditions of the West. Instead of trying to portray the negative image of Ethiopia and its people, this people would have used their ability to forestall schism, help the Ethiopian people to extirpate poverty, diseases and other social evils through direct investments, transfer of knowledge and other partnerships with foreign firms and organizations.
We have recently among the supporters and factions of CUD in the Diaspora read and heard accusations and counter accusations of unlawful money withdrawal and theft, the dictatorial leadership by the ex EDU member and ex officer of the kinijit international leadership (kil), his suspension from his chairmanship or the dismissal of the other members from the leadership as “weyane” agents or for their illicit actions, etc. Scandals and secrets are leaking out now and then on how collected money is misused by the upper echelons of the “support committees” and “sister organizations”. All of a sudden a letter handwritten by the invisible hand of the mother kinjit in Ethiopia from Kaliti prison came out to settle the ever-raging conflict in support of one group by ordering them to set up a new organization in the name of kinijit global council (kgc). A sop to a dying patient by equally profligate person, responsible for the riots, disturbances and destructions cannot do miracles at the last minute. By the way wasn’t the CUD had a list on the death rows of Ethiopian politicians including its own members? Such a father such a son! These diehard groups already at cutthroats are going to end up in total collapse with no future at all. Money extorted and under deceit of power and position as well as for arming a non-existent army of a so-called EPPF through the pariah state of Eritrea has dwindled or apportioned among the leaders in Diaspora.
The whole idea of kinijit (CUD) from the outset was factually based not on sincere politics of opposition but on deliberate manipulation, deception and dishonorable behavior. A party patched up from different groups and backgrounds with different ideas and views (conservatives, fundamentalists, ex-derg officials and centrists) and whose sole aim was power by any means possible without extensive and well-thought party program was doomed to failure. The way the election campaign was conducted among the populace with the subsequent rabble rousing as an end result has been given as evidence by those observers of the election. How can one explain when CUD campaigners going to villages and telling people that there is no government in Ethiopia and that the only thing left for them is to elect the CUD? In a country where people were devoid of multiparty culture for many years and people do associate the authority of government and state intermingled as one and the same, it was insincere bordering to criminal act to assert such mischievous to our rustic population. The same also applied true to the unemployed youth by tantalizing hopes of immediate solutions to their conditions, though the leadership of the CUD knew that these promises were simply illusions or castles in the air not to be realized for a country with enormous economic, political and structural challenges and problems.
We know that Ethiopia needs a credible and responsible opposition to be able to have a check and balance in government and where people can elect or unseat their representatives. This process can only become true if all who have stakes to form opposition or government are genuinely dealing the issues with arguments, follow the savoir-faire of our society, show wisdom and responsibility. Ethiopia is now on its way towards materializing this ambitious line with independent and opposition members occupying more than 30% of the parliamentary seats. EPRDF as the party bearing the government should also be open to views, ideas, opinions, suggestions, etc. and positive critics in order to involve and work together with the parties, represented at the Parliament, with the civic organizations and individuals. The majority of Ethiopians in the Diaspora have also to contribute positively towards uplifting the positive image of Ethiopia by informing their communities, local politicians and investors so that we pride upon a strong and democratic Ethiopia.

Dear EEO,
I appreciate the measured tone of your comment. But the long, sage advice is out of context. Why is it that TPLF supporters are long on what others should do and nothing about the group they support.
I would accept almost everything you say if only the TPLF did not have this bad habit of killing people on a regular basis.
What's your opinion about all the TPLF killings and other crimes mentioned in the article. You have to address that if you are sincere. Mind you Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging for killing some 180 people. Meles does better and puts Saddam to shame.

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
Well said, Professor Issayas Afeworki. The whole problem of Meles Zenawi declaring war is what you just said below:
"Meles is not scared of the ICU. Meles is scared because the ICU somalia leave its border open for the OLF and ONLF insurgents as a spring board to attack his regime.
Meles blocked all the borders of Sudan, Kenia, Djibuti by making alliance with the governments of those countries. But the ICU of somalian won't be complying to this so he forsaw insergency in that direction and wanted to kill it from its bud."
Thank you sir! If there is any one who cannot comprehend this, he/she is a dummy.

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
Dear EEE,
Well written article. I am sure the OLFits and AFDists are angry over the topic you wrote. We need to fight against these Shaabyia foot-soldiers and boot-lickers. OLF and AFD are shamless tribal politics foot ball players and home grown terrorists
who talk loud these days that OLF and ONLF are sending voluntary islamic fighters from Bale and Arsi regions in support of the United Islamic Courts (UIC)in Somalia. Ethiopia should now control its border with Somalia so that ONLF and OLF should not continue their free movement crossing the border.

Somalia Conflict Risk Alert
INTERNATIONAL CRISIS GROUP - Nairobi/Brussels, Nov 27, 2006
The draft resolution the U.S. intends to present to the UN Security Council on November 29 could trigger all-out war in Somalia and destabilise the entire Horn of Africa region by escalating the proxy conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea to dangerous new levels. Instead of siding with one party in the civil conflict – the weak and fragmented Ethiopia-backed Transitional Federal Government (TFG) – the UN Security Council should apply maximum pressure on both it and the Eritrea-backed Council of Somali Islamic Courts (CSIC) to resume negotiations without preconditions.
The proposed resolution, which has the backing of African members of the Security Council, would authorise deployment of a regional military force (IGASOM) in support of the TFG and exempt that entity and troop contributing countries – Ethiopia, Uganda and possibly Kenya, amongst others – from the existing UN arms embargo.
While its objectives are to strengthen the TFG, deter the CSIC from further expansion and avert the threat of full-scale war, it is likely to backfire on all three counts. Crisis Group has consistently opposed deployment of a regional intervention force – especially one involving front-line states such as Ethiopia – unless it has the consent of all warring parties, and called for more robust enforcement of the UN arms embargo. The UN Monitoring Group, which reported on October 16, similarly cited the dangers of such a deployment and urged instead strengthening the arms embargo through surveillance of all Somali borders.
Despite international recognition, the TFG has never enjoyed broad support or legitimacy within Somalia, and the TFG parliament split badly when it debated the issue of foreign troops in March 2005. Actual deployment would likely fracture the parliament beyond repair and reinforce the impression that the TFG is simply a proxy for Ethiopia. The loss of legitimacy in the eyes of the Somali public would be irreversible.
The CSIC, which controls most of south central Somalia, has repeatedly declared that it will wage a “jihad” against any foreign troops on Somali territory, including the Ethiopians already deployed there. It would likely perceive UN Security Council passage of the resolution as tantamount to a declaration of war. Rather than wait for the TFG to arm itself, it might well launch a pre-emptive attack on its seat in Baidoa.
The CSIC is viewed as a danger to its neighbours because of its irredentist views, and support for international terrorist elements and cross-border Ethiopian rebel groups. In addition, it threatens to unseat the internationally recognised TFG.
Instead of prioritising military protection of the TFG against the CSIC – which is itself receiving military support from as many as eight external countries – the international community should challenge the CSIC to reform its stance on each of these points and work towards a negotiated solution with the TFG. The TFG and CSIC are scheduled to meet in Khartoum in mid-December for a third round of Arab League facilitated peace talks. Although previous talks made little headway, more effective international pressure on the parties, including a more active involvement from the UN Secretary General via his Special Representative, would increase the likelihood of success. Without this, the resolution would give the CSIC an excuse to withdraw altogether and would kill any hope of a negotiated ceasefire. Military confrontation would be the only remaining option. Instead of authorising deployment of a regional force, the Council should push both parties to resume peace talks immediately. First on the agenda should be a comprehensive ceasefire covering:
• Disengagement of opposing forces;
• Withdrawal from Somalia of all foreign troops and military trainers; and
• Deployment of an International Verification Mission to monitor compliance with the agreement.
Any UN-sponsored military deployment should be designed to support an agreed ceasefire, not undermine efforts to achieve such a ceasefire, and should be made up of forces acceptable to both parties. If either party fails to demonstrate genuine commitment to this process, the Council should impose travel bans on its leaders, freeze assets and authorise economic sanctions against business interests. As so often in Somalia, the consequence of an ill-considered intervention is likely to be more conflict, not less. Military measures must remain a weapon of last resort.

Thanks for the partial listing of individual Ethiopians killed by Meles. Don't despair, some day justice will be done. In the meantime I encorage you to strenghten your charges by listing additional details such as time (dates), who gave the order, were were these pepole buried, why were they killed, who are the individuals who actually did the killing, winesses etc. The reason why these details are imporant is some day these criminals will face justice- trust me it is not that far away. If the detail is not documented then all your effort to bring justice will be in vain, All of us are proud of you for listing the victims

Dear all,
Please! Please! Please! let us prevent catastrophe at the Horn. Let as stop this madness that gripped our so called leaders. I failed to understand what benefit Ethiopia will gain war with Somalia at this juncture.
Contrary to the propaganda emitting from Zenewi and his minions there isn’t any danger to Ethiopia from Somalia. Where in Ethiopia proper Somali Court militia attacked? The Islamic Courts couldn’t possibly be danger to Ethiopia in that it will take them long time to sort out the internal problems of Somalia and I am sure it will take them decades before they can bring Somali to some kind of normalness.
Why! And Why AFRICANS always kill each other for the interest of foreign entities?

To Shaabia boot-licking OLF and AFD trators,
Ethiopian Affairs does not concern you and Pro-Ethiopia groups do not need you or your tribal diatribe. Go tell Shaabyia your master. We are martching without you. We will get hold of the Islamic fundamentalist volunteers you sent from Hara, Bale and Arsi few weeks back along with the 2000 Shaabia soldiers right inside Somalia and teach you a good lesson for the treason and terrorist crimes you committed against Ethiopia. Ethiopians shall return victorious. Long Live TPLF and Meles. Down with home-grown OLF and AFD terrorists that play tribal political foot-ball!

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
This war with Somalia is the making of Meles The Murderer and TPLF.If they want to fight it out,let them do it by themselves. There is nothing for other Ethiopians to fight for. They should fight the Tigreans in unison for their rights--not the Somalis who have not crossed into our motherland Ethiopia.
If it is the will of Ethiopian Somalis to be with their brothers and sisters, they should be allowed to do so.It is humane and the honest thing to do.Why should one people live in two or three countries? Unless we are colonialist,we must let Somalis unite with Somalia.
Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
The premeditated Tigrean decree (TPLF) that has nothing good to offer to the country was enabled to grip power:
(a) By exploiting Ethiopians that wanted to get rid of Mengistu.
(b) By disguising themselves as true Ethiopians that care about their people and honor the country’s national interest.
They exploited and abused Ethiopians for trusting them as their own fellow countrymen. Meles and his groups are sucking up on Ethiopians wealth and natural resources to benefit the few greedy TPLF. They have become overnight multi millionaires without any contributions to the country neither intellectually nor economically
Now Meles is digging into to Somalia’s affair by showing his support for his criminal longtime friend, the minority, non-productive government for his exploitation and expansion of dictatorial and minority rule as he did to Ethiopia with his Tigrean decree.
The warmonger Meles has gotten involved in the Somali war because:
(1) To prepare his future exile with his already brainwashed and easy to manipulate friend, Yusuf with the Tigrean decree propaganda.
(2) He wants to expand his fantasy of ethnic clashes and the dominance of the minority rule to guarantee his friend, Yusuf power by force.
(3) To block any democracy in Somalis therefore Meles will not be kicked out of Somalia if there is any election.
Nowadays, once dictators are pronounced no county will to take them. Examples are Mobutu, Saddam Hussain and Charles Taylor of Liberia. So Meles at his final stage is forced to dig his future hole.
All the money he criminally collected will not guarantee him peace on this earth!!!!
His “rise ” with his ill-conceived Tigrean decree will also be his cause for his fateful demise!!!!!

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
AFD statement on prospects of war between somalia and the regime in Ethiopoia
November 28, 2005
In its statement of June 5, 2006, the Executive Committee of the Alliance for Freedom and Democracy (AFD) registered its concern about worrisome developments in Somalia, particularly the attempt by the highly armed TPLF/EPRDF regime in Ethiopia to exploit the sad situation in Somalia to garner the support of the West, particularly that of the United States, by jumping on the bandwagon of the war on terror particularly to fight what it classified as home grown terrorists including AFD, OLF and ONLF.
Today we have learned to our deep dismay that the US government is submitting a draft resolution to the UN Security Council asking for the repeal of the arms embargo on Somalia. We are afraid that this would bestow legal cover on Meles Zenawi’s adventures in Somalia where his army may eliminate OLF and ONLF-foot-soldiers on site. As these two Fronts are members of AFD, we full-heartedly concur with (Please provide the full name ICG’s (Internatonal Crisis Group) dire assessment that this action risks igniting a regional war; including the clandestine standing army of OLF and ONLF in parts of Ethiopia.
At a highly volatile historical juncture when relations between the world’s major religions are increasingly getting sour throughout the world, at a time when there is a widespread sentiment and perception in the Muslim world that the Western World is becoming increasingly Islamophobic, Ethiopia’s leadership is about to plunge the already volatile United Islamic Courts in Somalia into total chaos by militarily interfering and thereby aborting the Khartoum process of dialogue that has the best chance of restoring stability. The international community should not pour fuel on an already complicated United Islamic Courts’ situation in Somalia by giving the green light to the Ethiopian leadership that ignored the duties of AFD in the region and is trying to take a poor country into a costly war with its neighbor igniting a larger and devastating regional conflict.
When the situation in Iraq is getting complicated and thus requiring a rethinking of strategy, it is counterproductive for the United States to pursue the same policy in Somalia, a policy rejected by the US electorate in a recent election. The attempt by the US administration to provide legal cover for its proxy in the Horn to invade Somalia will certainly become a catalyst for starting a war that has all the hallmarks and ingredients to engulf the entire region and beyond. We managing the AFD are also concerned to notice that a pattern of disinformation and deliberate misinformation by those with an ax to grind in a manner reminiscent of news coverage preceding the Iraqi war is now distorting the actual situation on the ground in favor of Ethiopia by ignoring the cry of the United Islamic Courts of Somalia.
The Alliance (AFD) based on its hitherto relations with some senators and its participation on hearings, calls on the United States to reconsider this resolution and rather concentrate efforts on encouraging the parties in Somalia to come to the negotiation table to resolve their differences without external interference. We along the Eritrean government call upon the international community to rather press the regime in Ethiopia to heed the call for an all-inclusive dialogue to resolve the tension between Somalia and Ethiopia and between Eritrea and Ethiopia rather than embarking on another costly adventure in a neighboring country.
While advising the parties in Somalia to seek mutual accommodation, exercise moderation and compromise rather than fanning irredentist rhetoric, we urge the EPRDF and its benefactors to desist from plunging the region into chaos and planting the venomous seeds of religious strife. AFD along with its allies will do its utmost to see that no war takes place in Somalia.

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
Weyane got things his way, because the pro democratic opposition was weak and fragmented. Unless we get an assurance from AFD especially from OLF and Ogaden liberation front about the territorial integrity of our country, we can not blame Weyane for his war tactic with Somali ICU. We know Weyane use this opportunity to divert our democratic movement by territorial integrity of our poor country. We know Weyane is cashing out of this war, but we should not for get the other side. Somali is using shabby Shabia and other strategic enemy of our country which have strategic interest by disintegrating our beloved home land. So the best way for pro Ethiopians is to get assurance from AFD especially from the Ogaden and OLF. Otherwise, it is nonsense to go out for demonstration with separatist group against the territorial integrity of our beloved country. It is a bad news for the Ethiopian people and its democratic movement. IT is a final exam for those who call them self’s AFD.

Re: Outsourcing the Somali war to a Tigrean warlord
Kinijit North America’s problem has been compounded after it unwisely entangled itself with the so-called “Alliance for Democracy.” The confusion and anger that followed the announcement of AFD had completely sucked the life out of the strong Kinijit movement world- wide. The way to get back to the pre-AFD status has to begin with the unequivocal disassociation of Knijit from AFD. AFD has not shown interest to rectify the glaring discrepancies in its bylaws and memorandum of understanding. Kinijit’s association with this group has completely derailed the struggle off its base. It has relegated the focus of the struggle, which includes the freeing of the gallant leaders from prison, democracy and the rule of law in Ethiopia off the radar screen for many Ethiopians in the Diaspora. At this stage, AFD cannot be redeemed. It has to be abandoned. Kinijit has to disassociate itself from this group if it is to refocus its efforts on the most important issues facing Ethiopia and rehabilitate itself with the Diaspora Ethiopian communities.

OROMO LIBERATION FRONT
The current conflict in Somalia can lead to a regional catastrophe
Press Release
November 29, 2006 — The Oromo Liberation Front views the current skirmish between the armed forces of the Somalia’s Union of Islamic Courts and the Ethiopian regime with a grave concern. The skirmish unless contained as a matter of urgency could engulf the Horn of Africa region with devastating consequences. The Horn of Africa is one of the poorest regions of the world and a senseless war, without any doubt, will only exacerbate the disastrous economic, social and political situations created by decades of ethnic oppression, armed conflicts, and drought.
The Oromo people share long historical ties with the people of Somalia. We are mindful that the people of Somalia have lived without a central government for the past 16 years and we value their efforts to rebuild their country. We believe that the people of Somalia must be supported in a positive manner acceptable to them to rebuild their country and shape their future. On the other hand, we consider the interference in the internal affairs of Somalia by the regime of Ethiopia and others to be totally irresponsible. Meles Zenawi’s interference in the volatile situation in Somalia is not only a futile attempt to divert attention from his regime’s abhorrent dictatorship and human rights abuses it is inflicting on Oromos and other people in Ethiopia, but also a dangerous manoeuvre that will have longstanding negative consequences for peace in Northeast Africa as a whole.
Oromia shares a considerable length of border with Somalia. We are seriously concerned that the war between Ethiopia and Somalia would cause further suffering of the Oromo and other peoples, and instability in the region. The Ethiopian regime will yet again squander the resource of Oromia that it controls illegally on its war effort and will send young Oromo conscripts as cannon fodders just as it did in its war against Eritrea in 2000.
The Oromo people will gain nothing from the war between Ethiopia and Somalia and therefore must refrain from collaborating with the Ethiopian regime in the war effort. On the contrary, we call up on the Oromo people to remain focussed on the national liberation struggle to liberate Oromia from Ethiopian colonization.
We would like to remind all involved in the ongoing conflict in Somalia to show restraint and give diplomacy a chance to resolve differences. We would also like to express our concerns to the international community about the looming disaster and urge them to stop the harmful involvement of the Ethiopian regime in Somalia’s internal political affairs.
