Meles Zenawi told parliament the CUD had committed "serious crimes"

ADDIS ABABA, 11 Oct 2005 (IRIN) - Opposition members of parliament in Ethiopia could face prosecution after their immunity was lifted following a boycott of the opening session of the legislature, MPs loyal to the government decided on Tuesday.

The decision sparked a mass walkout by around 40 opposition law makers who had taken up their seats despite an increasingly hostile stand-off between the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front and the largest opposition party, the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD).

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told parliament the CUD had committed "serious crimes" by threatening to take power through street demonstrations and insurrection during bitterly contested May elections dogged by allegations of fraud and vote rigging.

"If they take illegal actions then this government has to see to it the constitution is protected," Meles told parliament on its second day.

"They want to use immunity to crash the constitution," he added. "Immunity is used to defend the constitution, not dismantle it, so this immunity must be removed for the sake of peace and stability in the country."

Some 334 MPs voted in favour of the motion stripping the opposition MPs of their immunity, while 35 opposed it and two abstained.

The new law, according to government officials, means charges could be brought against boycotting CUD members found to have been behind post-election disturbances or found to be planning any disturbances.

They cannot, however, be prosecuted for not attending parliament.

Opposition parties have been protesting since the May polls that voting had been rigged in favour of the ruling party. Violent clashes with security forces left 42 protesters dead.

The chairman of the opposition United Ethiopian Democratic Forces, Beyene Petros, said the move was unconstitutional before walking out with his party members.

"This House can remove immunity if they are caught red-handed committing crimes. They have not done that. This is a political issue and bad for the country," he said.

Hailu Shawel, leader of the CUD, insisted their boycott would continue. "We are prisoners here," he said after watching the debate on state-run television. "This means that we are going to be herded into jail. They will concoct charges against us."

Former youth sport and culture minister Teshome Toga, who is now speaker of the House of People's Representatives, told the 443 MPs who attended the house that the decision would only apply to those boycotting parliament.

"This concerns only those who did not join parliament. The immunity works only if the party accepts the mandate of the people and come to sit in this house," he said.

Meles also announced a major reshuffle of his cabinet, increasing the number of posts from 18 to 20.

Senior ministers who lost their positions included education minister Genet Zewdie, health minister Kebede Tadesse and information minister Bereket Simon.

The standoff over the disputed polls has also left the capital city, Addis Ababa, - home to four million people and the headquarters of the African Union - without an administration.

The CUD has refused to take up their seats on the council and parliament voted for a transitional former city government - voted out in May's election - to continue running affairs.

Ethiopians all over the world should unite and fight Melese until he disappears from the crust of the earth. He is in this world to destroy the brains of Ethiopia. Ladies and gentle men, your country needs you more thanever, even more than during the Italian invasion. The people of Ethiopian has to show disobidence in every possible way. Let's act know before each of us ended up in jail.

The Ethiopian people ushered these criminal thugs ( TPLF s) into Addis Ababa to take power thinking they are good, it was a mistake. The Ethiopian People will have to get rid of TPLF the way they let them in.

Re: Meles Zenawi told parliament the CUD had committed "serious crimes"

Well well well, now, only now I am starting to feel postively that our beloved nation is going to get back her freedom. By freedom i mean nothingelse but freedom. Don't think that I am using unwarranted wards out of context. See we have to be careful about our usage of words. So when i talk about freedom i am implaying that the nature of the struggle the Ethiopian people have waged is almost like the libration struggle the rest of Africa waged against their Europian colonizers decades ago.

Such a comparison is intersting in amy ways than it looks at first sight. For me what makes it most intersting is the nature of the enemy. In the case of the rest of Africa it was against formidable colonial mastrs to whom the African librations fighters were no matchs in any way. And through out that time our beloved Ethiopia was the only country who successfuly defended her freedom. Hence the rest of Africa and for that matter all the oppressed and downtroden people of the rest of the world were looking towards Ethiopia as their source of inspiration and symbole of freedom. finally the preseverance of Africans against the colonial masters paid of as they secured there freedom.
Equating the current struggle of the Ethiopian peole with colonilism is thus envoking an antithesis of the long and glorious Ethiopian past. A country which defended its independence from formidable Europian powers has allowed itself to be dominated by the Woyane who are hundful of anti-ethiopian elemnts who are bent to disintegrate this country.
So the current generation of Ethiopians have no cause of priding themselves about overthrowing the Woyane once it happens!!! Rather they have to ask themselves what happened to the glorious past to tolerate the woyane for 14 years!!!

This is a shameful scar all of us are going to carry around whereever we go, probably much more shamful than the standard tag of famine every body branded us with since for the last three decades!!! So let us get done with the job of getting red of the Woyane as soon as we can, and do away with poverty too, which (the latter)is a very easy byproduct (of the former).

The Ethiopian people have to take matters into their own hands and reclaim their vote. They need complete accountability from the Judas within CUDP. What happened last week is nothing short of high treason.

One thing is for sure the TPLF Cosa Nostra is not going to make Hailu Shawel another Asrat Woldeyes.

Re: Meles Zenawi told parliament the CUD had committed "serious crimes"

It is agonizing to be sitting here and lsiten to the crimes being waged by a group of idiots on the Ethiopian people. They are pushing the patience of the hero Ethiopian people to its breaking limit. Let it break and demolish the rootless regime of meles and restore democracy and freedom on the basis of equality, fraternity and respect of its people. It is not going to be long for the Ethiopian people to see its struggle yielding fruit. I tell you that all members of the semingly Parliament and cabinet members have sleepless nights in view of the crime their government is making against the Ethiopia and its people. One more thing, I am not happy with the contents of the Amharic article posted, I guess by EPRP, On Ethiomedia, today. It has little if any to positively contribut to the strugle being waged by the Ethiopian people. Fighting with the brutal regime from here and there are not the same if not negligible. We should draw lessons from past tactical errors.

Re: Meles Zenawi told parliament the CUD had committed "serious crimes"

The nasty fascist Zenawi knows very well that he is siiting on a time bomb. he is in a place where he should not be, and one he does not deserve. His crime is haunting him. He knows he has a formidable opposition. He knows the Ethiopian people want him out and tried for murder, corruption, vote rigging and fraud.
For all these reasons, he will always pursue the most destructive way to save him self or rather destroy himself. Jailing people, issuing threats, murder are his chosen methods to maintain his position. He lives by violence. that is the nature of the brutal dictator.

No thing Zenawi has done done in the last 14 years excludes the use of such acts of violence as well as treachery and deceit to maintain his power.

What Zenawi has done today in his parliament is approve the use of force against the Ethiopian people. Using his illegitimate and illegal parliament as a fig leaf, he has launched a bloody offensive against our people.

The vicious dictator has embarked on his familiar path of destroying the gains of our people, suffocating the life out of our people and denying their rights to make their own choice. Zenawi is competing with time to destroy as much as he can before his own downfall and destruction

The Ethiopian people have no choice but to launch their own offensive. The peaceful struggle should be planned, coordinated and put into action. The stay at home campaign, the withdrawal of cooperation with the fascist regime have to be put into action.
The vicious dictator and his phoney parliament have no power against the collective will of the Ethiopian people.

Re: Meles Zenawi told parliament the CUD had committed "serious crimes"

Meles is desperate now to take any action to legitimize his illegal parliament. The Ethiopian people should stand firm and resolved to expose and defeat the Meles regime once and for all. Meles and his party are enemies of Ethiopia and should be removed from power using peaceful and non-violent means. No power on earth can stop the united stand of the Ethiopian people to unseat this despotic regime. Any illegal action he wants to take against the opposition in the name of protecting peace and stability should not be taken lightly but resisted vigorously until he succumbs to the will of the people. There is no turning back; we’ve to show to the peace loving people of the world that we Ethiopians are determined than ever before to take our country back from the clutches of Meles and is mercenaries. Ethiopia will be free and prosperous with the sacrifices of her courageous sons and daughters at home and in the Diaspora.

Aye Wadi-Adwa!!

What an insult in to our national pride!! Yatarik Atala!!! Remember that!? Hey but this is the 21st century!? Shouldn't the very fact that U are an internate user alert you to that fact!!
But being just a user doesn't garant admission to the century I guess!! So you are a mistake in chronology!!!
I am frastrated anyway you should be the last person to react to. I mean u understand what I mean by the necessity of belongingness to the 21st century. It means not taking pride what so ever in rule by force. For what makes you differnt from a highway man who takes people's belongings by the power of the gun.
I am saying all this becaue i sensed that u are trying to take pride as some one belonging to Meleses homeland. Well any one with a measure of self-esteem can never do that! But do you have any sense of that!? I am sure you don't. So it is me who is nonesense onw trying to talk some sense to u. It is so frastrating really when are people like you going to think by their own mind instead of surrendering it to a brute like Meles!? I don't want to loss hope, but given we have more than our fair share of self-insulting less-humans like you, it is going to be a long way before we make it to the 21 century as a nation. I don't care which ethnic group you belong. That is not my language any way. Hey don't get me wrong at list for this one. By 'That is not my language', I mean i don't think in terms of ethnicity. I try to address you as a person, you should feel happy about that. That is if you know its virtue!!
Dell La Kinijit!! For it is there to show Ethiopia the way to the 21 century!!!

We know you don't have any freedom to talk against the EPLF junta Meles. Believe me we will provide you freedom once more as we did it in Adwa more than twice. The alternative is better.Reconciliation.Even different races have reconciled.I think it would better for us to take that route.

Re: Meles Zenawi told parliament the CUD had committed "serious crimes"

Our enemy is one and only one that is Meles, the mastermind of all this atrocity, the rest are just blindfolded admirers of their master(Meles). The case in point is "Abadula Gemeda" who was a simple military corporal surrendered during the war aginst TPLF .That time was the hottest moment for Meles who was hand picking those naive ones who could contribute for his evil dream, disintgrating Ethiopia in ethnic lines.Abadula the real naive appreciating Meles dicours during the rebelion time fell in the trap.Meles recruited such laymen from the so called oppressed ethnic groups in number and brain washed them to stand against Neftegna (fictious oppressors created and dramatized by this evil one, Meles).Abadula and the likes commenced believing in Meles as god father and became a killing tool. This man and the others alike are ready to kill the innocent people at any time the order is given by their master. Meles words are the word of God for Abadula and the likes !!!For me no wonder if the MP adopts on what ever issue is raised by the parliament. They are all the tools of meles to serv him any time he needs. They are all hipnotised by Meles and lost their sense of analising things and became rohbot. To my understanding, "IF MELES GOES AWAY,IT WILL GIVE BIRTH TO THE LIBERTY OF ETHIOPIA"

This man is the most WICKED one that our country has encountered in its long history. His dream is to demolish the Ethiopianess that most of we Ethiopians love and pride of it.Our Ethiopia is not built in an over night as he and his diciples advocate, rather it has a long and genial history.

The day Meles runs away is not far,The day he leaves the country in any state(vanishing like ashes in the sky most probabely) our joy will come back!!!!!!

As a Tigrean, I like to correct you that we have always been standing for our country, and will continue to stand for her. And I'm sure you know that for as long as Ethiopia Existed so has Tigray. I'd also like to let you know that at this very moment, the Tigray people are being prisoned, and killed just like their other Ethiopian brothers and sisters. How are we held accountable for any killings when we are being killed ourselves.I understand your anger, and furstration, but we are in the same boat with you. If anything, remarks like this will serve the regimes purpose of alienating the Tigreans from the rest of Ethiopia. But I can assure you that all Tigreans with the exception of those that in the EPRDF's league, or tied tied with regime with special interest(sell outs)are for Democracy, and united Ethiopia.

With people like you I see bright hope ahead for our beloved Ethiopia. Yes this is what i call belongingness to the century that we belong at its best!!! (my godness i am so obsessed with this idea)
Besides stance like yours is the latest version of the essense of bravery and shining individualism and proud Ethiopianness!!!

Batarafa please let us forget people like the one who call him/herself 'wisdom'. We should know better than noticing the existance of people like them. They are not worth our time and attention. Besides what makes us better than them if we have to reply to them by degenerating to their level of stupidity. Let them suffer their own sickness, don't suffer their sickness foe them. My good lord should i tell you bright Ethiopians this!!!!!!?????

Re: Meles Zenawi told parliament the CUD had committed "serious crimes"

ETHIOPIA MEKONNEN, THANK YOU

This is what have been missing from the brothers/sisters TIGREANS (TAKING CLEAR POSITIONS) When the Eritrean double agents killing our people and our country seating in Addis Abeba as representative of Tigrean people. You know I know who saved the people in Tigray when Essayas sent his army and his jets to Mekele killing children, destroying schools hospitals. You know also without Melesse Zenawe today our brothers/sisters in Eritrea could been free from one of the ugliest dictator of our time.
We know Tigray is today one big prison, but how many Tigreans are part the struggle, don't forget you can also be victims by association, many good Ethiopian from Tigray at home and in Diaspora trying to make a difference by contributing their share, some are balancing the situation by staying in the middle to ride with the winner. When our country future is at stake, no body is immune from being responsible. The current government for the last 14 years showed officially that they are not for Ethiopia and Ethiopians, they insult the country and the people publicly, the hatred and division they induced among our population getting different dimension never seen in our country history not even when Duce Mussolini invaded and occupied our country for short period times. Who are these guys, why we let them do what they are doing. My brother from Tigray I think I know why:
1- we still believe they are from Tigray, they may change
2- Almost all Ethiopians understood their evil
design, the Rwanda type killing. They didn't
hesitate to tell the whole world forecasting" what
will happen in Ethiopia will make the
Rwanda's killing a child game" mind you this is
from our government who supposed to
protect the people and the country
from any external aggression, it's
hard to believe but they're acting
more than our worst enemies. So we choose not
to play their game.
3- even though the current peaceful struggle
is not the right one, for this kind strange unusual
Peoples' enemies we have to use unusual strategy
to achieve and bring about, the peace that our
poor people so thirsty.
4- because of their diabolical desire and
underground provocation and campaign to create
anarchism, we refuse to play their game.
5- Not in Ethiopia, the Rwandans' will not happen
here not in Ethiopia Mr. Bereket.
6- we are brothers and sisters, we refuse to kill
each others.
So please Mr. Meless/Bereket leave us or show the real of you, take off your mask so the innocents people you manipulated and brain washed to use them as instrument to realize your evil design can see you and turn the machine gun against you. I guaranty you this will not be long before the armed force lead by the people will rise as one. It is still time for you, hear out, the people are spoken do the right thing leave by transferring the governance for the elected, you're not you never been. Take the fourteen years as a credit to help rid off the other murderer col. Mengistu. You did a good job then you are in the history book for that, don't blow it.

GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA

Re: Meles Zenawi told parliament the CUD had committed "serious crimes"

Dear brothers and Sisters,
It is understandabel that the majority of respondants are mad like hale by Meles Zenawi's stand against Opposition forces specially the thrait he is making against CUD members. For those who don't know him yet, let me tell you who Meles is, he is a dictator in every way. Not only a dectator but a ruthless one. Ethiopia does not have a dimocratically elected government. He allowed elections because he was forced to. He has no idea what the majority of Ethiopians thinking about him until the election day. When the voters surprised him he stole the election and claimed he won. That simple. How can he knows the feeling of ordinary Ethiopians? Personally, he has no contact what so ever. He is surounded by his Woyane friends (all Tigray)busy ploting skims how they can keep us divided more and more(Amhara, Oromo, Gurage, Somale, Adere, Sidama, ETC.) so that they (TPLF) can stay in power. Friends, Democracy has more than one side. Ethiopia has only Meles's side. Democracy is not only one view, but several views. Meles does not want to hear any other view but his. A democratic leader must take into account the greviances of all citizens, specially elected representatives. Meles does not understand that. Who do you blame for that? Ourselves, for allowing Meles to stay in power for over 14 years. How do we undo that? By uniting and supporting the opposition forces. Remember Woyane's game, divide and Rule. For that reason I support the opposition's peaceful resistnce and the sacrifice they are making for you and me. I salute them and admire them for their curage. I hope all peace & Democracy loving fellow Ethiopians will support them too.
