bird identifacation

please can someone help me identify a duck that I spotted on hawkridge reservoir .this aafternoon a diving duck was spotted on the water with a white nape,the size of a smew but it wasn't black or white shortish body and neck and short bill was kept company with a pair of mallards then it swam off there was no other duck on the lake that was the same as this one,has any one seen the said bird.also 20 plus cananda geese grey heron,and a kingfisher diving . look forward to hearing what the bird could be.

Hi Kate,
An immature male Hooded Merganser was reported at Hawkridge Res today by Roy Kelly. It's probably an escape from the nearby wildfowl collection at Spaxton!
