Avalon Marshes autumn 2015

Well the weather seems to think it’s the autumn and the birds are getting that way too…

Ham Wall 2VP – west end of lake

Today
3 Yellow Wag
2 Garganey
2 Green Sand
1 Common Sand
60+ Blackwit
4 Wigeon
1 GW Egret
and multiple Lapwing, L Egret, G Heron, Gadwall, etc

Yesterday
Some of the above most notably the Blackwits, plus a Redshank & Hobby

As ever with 2VP, I couldn't be entirely sure I'd seen every interesting bird present even after an hour's grilling.

Osprey reported at Ham Wall this morning on the web

Re: Avalon Marshes autumn 2015

Ash Warne found the Osprey at 9.15 this morning from the Tor Hide and it was around when I left at 11.00. Also plenty of Sand Martins moving through in both Ham Wall and Shapwick. There was a small tern on Meare Heath but after watching it for nearly an hour, it never came close enough to get a firm ID.

Re: Avalon Marshes autumn 2015

Near 2VP this morning, and viewed from the path over the bridges (good suggestion, as the main body of birds is not visible from the railway path), 80-90 Blackwits. After a time, we saw 40-50 head to another location further from the path, so numbers may be difficult to get accurate. No other waders seen.
4 Marsh Harriers in 2 pairs seen, 3 hobbies, 6+ Great White Egrets, 1 Bittern in flight, 8+ buzzards.
