Cuckoo calling from Catcott Reserve at 20.15 this evening. My first for the season.
There were 6 Whimbrel at Catcott Lows at 12.30 today together with a male Garganey.
Cuckoo calling at Doniford early this morning, the first here.
A Cuckoo calling at Hams Wall this afternoon
Male cuckoo seen and heard and female heard on the lower Huntspill this morning. Male was chased off further downstream by a reed warbler at one point. A few whimbrel on the saltings.
Wow! What is there about the male/female call that allows ID between them, please? I am fascinated
Female Cuckoos have a 'bubbling' call, not often heard, and very different from the male's song. Check out http://www.xeno-canto.org/181351
Yes, it was the distinctive bubbling or chuckling call of a female, from the reeds below the tree the male was sitting in.
Heard by me once, 04.30, right outside bedroom window. I did not have a clue what it was at the time, sounds "tropical"......
Many thanks. Amazing!
