I have blackcaps in my front garden once again this year after a break for the last 2 winters, I am quite surprised to see them taking sunflower hearts that were put out for my regulars, greenfinch and goldfinches.
1 x Male & 1 x Female Blackcaps feeding on crab apples in my Butleigh garden all this week. Today (7 Jan) a single Siskin among a large (60+)influx of Goldfinches making short work of sunflower hearts both on the table & in feeders.
We've had a single young male Blackcap for about a week now (Merriott). To be honest I dread seeing them in the garden
Three years ago we had a really aggressive male that chased everything off all the feeders including Starlings !
Within two weeks we had lost 18x Long Tailed Tits 15x Goldfinches all our chaffinches BlueTits Great Tits Coal Tits the lot. The garden was empty for months after and never recovered until this year.
Blackcaps can be an absolute curse!
