Starling Behaviour

For the past couple of weeks I have noticed Starlings on top of the Roofs of known breeding locations singing. I presume that they are either protecting their nesting sites or claiming them.
This afternoon I watched 2 birds going in and out of a known nest site next to our house. We have dozens of nesting sites near our house. I also know that birds roost in the nest sites at night. Standing next to them when they have gone to roost gives rise to a surprising amount of chatter.
Anyone happen to know when they start to lay a claim to nest sites??
