Steart Marshes - 7 August 2014

Steart Marshes - 7 August 2014 (late afternoon)

2 Hobbies - a 2cy falcon spent c15 minutes insecting low above the meadows near the new hides. Later an adult male appeared flying quite high and very fast. It intercepted a Chaffinch head-on, chased it, but despite a lightning vertical stoop failed to catch the passerine before it reached the cover of a Hawthorn bush. The falcon was on fire and flew fast and low out over the marshes before rising up and attacking a small flock of Linnets flying higher up. It was seen to ring-up, select a potential victim and attack it 3-4 times as the lucky Linnet dropped down to reach the safety of a Hawthorn hedge. Undeterred, the Hobby accelerated to lightning speed low over the marshes and disappeared towards Steart village stirring up a flock of c30 Starlings as it was lost to view.

4 Peregrine - a 2cy male was seen flying low over on the marshes before landing and roosting for about 10 minutes on a open raised area. Later, three falcons were seen activating together, probably a family group involving an adult female and two juveniles.

5 Common Kestrel - hover-hunting above and around the marshes.

5 Common Buzzard - all soaring and two attempting hover-hunting.
