Wheeling Gulls

Huge numbers of birds - mainly herring gull but I think there were corvids as well wheeling around 200 to 300 foot up, just south of the road from Priorswood to Monkton Heathfield around 8pm this evening. My impression was that they were hawking for insects - could this be flying ants or something related to the canal beneath them?

Re: Wheeling Gulls

Probably flying ants, there've been a lot of them around Bathpool in the last day or two.

Best Wishes,
Bill,

It 's always worth checking these ant hunting gatherings for other participants such as terns and hobbies.

Re: Wheeling Gulls

It was a flock of wheeling Jackdaws over the west of Wells last evening, most of them in moult and having a lack of feathers were finding it difficult to "hover" and fly slowly enough to snatch their insect prey!
