Night Heron Bonanza!

3-July-14
A great late evening at Ham Wall, during which we saw a Barn Owl carrying prey past the 2nd viewing platform, flying towards the distant owl-boxes, the pair of Common Terns ‘harrying’ and driving off 2 different male Marsh Harriers that had the temerity to pass close to their nesting-raft, Great White and Little Egrets flying westwards, presumably to their Noah’s Lake roost, and 3 food-calling young Tawny Owls (one seen) along the main track between the two platforms, was amazingly topped-off by not one, but 3 adult Night Herons. Firstly, at 22:20 hrs, 2 adults together, flew calling loudly, well above tree-top height, over the 1st viewing platform, going slowly south-east in the direction of the Torr. We watched as they gradually lost height and went down somewhere over Street Heath marsh. The four of us had just finished congratulating each other, when at 22:24 hrs a third calling adult followed the others, again passing over the 1st viewing platform – absolutely amazing, what a night!!
