Nigel Cottle and I will be leading the SOS Field Meeting at Haddon Hill this Saturday 28th. Meet in the South West Water Car Park at SS970287 at 0930. We should see the usual heathland birds such as Tree Pipit and, hopefully, a good variety of butterflies and moths. Walk will last around 3 hours and there are several good areas to picnic should you bring a packed lunch. See you there.
polite request ,if any one is going from the cheddar area to this meeting would be willing to share the cost of travel if they would like or put up with a passenger
Sorry you were unable to come Neville. The seven of us had an enjoyable day (it took us five hours) despite a couple of soakings. Bird highlights were Wood Warbler, Redstart, Tree Pipit, Siskin and Spotted Flycatchers (including family parties) at 2 sites. Good views of Golden-ringed Dragonflies and several moths plus for some of us a Common Lizard. Many thanks to all.
As Brian says, an enjoyable trip. We failed to find Heath Fritillary but did see Large Skipper, Small Heath, Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Small Tortoishell and Red Admiral. Several moth species: Common Carpet, Northern Spinach, Smoky Wave, Brown Silver-line, Celypha lacunana, Catoptria margaritella & Crambus pascuella.
I would just like to say that we both had an extremely enjoyable time and learnt a lot from some very informed people. We will be sending our membership form back by return and enjoy meeting up again soon.
