Steart Marshes - 30 April 2014

Steart Marshes - 30 April 2014 (late afternoon)

2 Peregrine (adult pair) - initially perched on adjacent pylons for at least 90 minutes. Later the male flew off, soared around high for almost 15 minutes and drifted slowly out over to the coast at Wall Common. He suddenly adopted a hunting flight and then made a vertical stoop at unseen prey just beyond the shingle bank. He pulled up and the female appeared and dived at a fleeing Dunlin. The falcons executed about eight attacks in succession but the wader skilfully escaped. One falcon cruised in and appeared to land on the beach, just out of sight. The other disappeared but probably landed nearby.

3-4 Kestrel - various sightings, mostly hover-hunting. An adult male located soaring very high (300-400m up) above the marshes for five minutes before drifting down and commencing hovering.

2-3 Sparrowhawk - all soaring single hawks. One female (probably immature) was pestered for several minutes by three Carrion Crows.

14+ Common Buzzard - two perched close together on the ground. The rest were soaring singles, pairs or groups of up to three hawks.

1 Short-eared Owl - hunting by quartering the marshes.

Also:

1 Common Swift - high above the River Parrett flying South.
20 Whimbrel - 17 flying in a flock above Catsford Common and then 3 flying East along the shoreline.
2 Little Ringed Plover - on an island in the large lagoon.
2 Oystercatcher
2 Lapwing
6 Raven
6+ Little Egret
6 Grey Heron
15+ Skylark
2 Whitethroat
