Goosanders

13 Goosanders at Westhay Reserve yesterday morning. Mostly females, although there appeared to be at least 2 males in eclipse plumage. Reasonable numbers of duck, including Shoveler, Gadwall, Tufted, and a pair of Wigeon. A male Marsh Harrier appeared twice.

Re: Goosanders

Walking from the Tar steps towards Withypool during the week i noticed six birds on the river which turned out to be three pairs of Goosanders. Seems quite unusual to find these type of birds in such an environment. I also heard a distinct birdcall coming from the deciduous woodland banking away from the river which i have not heard before. It was a high pitched single syllable call somewhat like a tree frog. Any ideas what this might have been. I am quite good with bird song and this one has stumped me.
