Huntspill 6 December

3 drake goosander fishing between Sloway and A38 bridges at 10am. Gone by the time I returned at 11. Kingfisher and water rail below Sloway. Large wader roost, mostly redshank, dunlin and curlew in the estuary + the usual wigeon, teal, bh gulls, herons and little egrets, and 100+ avocets flying about on Steart side on the falling Spring tide.

I got to the sluice area just after 08.00 and at that time the tide was still rising driven by a strong wind. Very little of the grass area around the sluice stayed above the sea and the wader flocks were almost constantly on the wing trying to find a landing place. I saw the same birds as Richard plus several Grey Plover, Golden Plover and a few Knot. There were a hundred or so Wigeon near the sluice plus a few Teal and a flock of Skylarks but no sea ducks that I could find.
