Fosters Picture House

Does anysone have any information of Fosters Picture House in Lurgan, or any photos, stories etc

Re: Fosters Picture House

I used to there with my grandmother. It became the Calypso dance hall in Carnegie Street about the late 1960's.

Re: Re: Fosters Picture House

Can you remember anythin more about it, who ran it, how long it had been there etc

Re: Re: Re: Fosters Picture House

I know that my mother used to go there when she was young and that was around the 1940's. I remember going there in the 60's and at that time there was only the Fosters and the Lyric which was on Union street and the picture was changed everyother day so that we went one night to the Fosters and then the Lyric the other night. I cannot remember who owned it but Jimmy McCleary ran the Calypso dance hall after they closed the Fosters. The Lyric was owned by a man called McMurry. He had a sweet shop at the top of Castle Lane.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Fosters Picture House

Alison, That is correct, it is a sad sight now, almost completely gone except for the wall at the town-end.
There is no Cinemas now in the town, TV has taken over as the four screen cinema on the Portadown Road has closed down due to lack of numbers attending.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Fosters Picture House

I have such good memories from the good old days. Which if you look at it was not such a long time ago. I had many a fun night at the fosters and the lyric. Do you still live in Lurgan ?. I still have some family in the area of Craigavon. Whom I have lost touch with, shame. I live such a long way from home but I still read the Lurgan Mail online and I remember Lurgan as a wonderful place to live and will always be proud of my heritage. Nice to talk with ya, Alison. What is your name ?
