There should be some ground rules as to the Plankowners' dates of service on Kitty Hawk. About half of the Plankowners list their dates of service as 60-** and the others as 61-**. I myself stated when I joined the association that my service dates were 1961-62 because I didn't actually go aboard until 24 April, 1961. I had volunteered for transfer to Kitty Hawk from USS Lake Champlain in August of 1960. When I drug out my NAVPERS 601-5 Form (History of Assignments) recently I noticed that my duty assignment on August 29, 1960, was "PRECOMTRA USS KITTY HAWK CVA63" and my Activity was "RECSTA NORVA FLTRACEN". Then I was temporarily assigned to USS Randolph from 8 November, 1960, until 14 April, 1961. So, in view of these facts, should my service aboard Kitty Hawk be 60-62, or 61-62? Just wondering.
Sam: I was assigned to the Kitty Hawk in the Fall of 60' while working at the Naval Academy. I was sent to Precom at Little Creek, VA. then on to Camden, NJ in Nov or Dec. waiting for the Hawk to be completed. While I was at Little Creek, they gave me the USS Kitty Hawk shoulder patch. Therefore, my answer is I was attached to the Kitty Hawk 60-61. I was discharged as soon as we dropped anchor in Norfolk, VA in July 61. And yes, I'm still a pollywog!
