Shipmates,
Many questions about major events on the Kitty Hawk can be answered -- or dates pinpointed -- in the command histories. I've pasted the link to the Naval Historical Center's command history Web site. I've been using them on the ship for the project I'm working on, and am surprised on what's there ... and what's not. If what you're looking for was classified back then (the U-2 flights, early overflights of "combat" zones in 1962, the diversion to Korea after the Pueblo incident and the UFO recovery (just kidding on this last one)) then it won't be in the command history. However, things like fires, port visits, deployment dates and the like are in there! The older ones are very good reading, too.

I noticed that there is no record of the fire that occurred the first night out of San Diego en route to Hawaii on the 77-78 West-Pac.
There was no loss of life but if my memory serves me right, we were dead in the water for about 10-12 hours.
The fire started in the wire racks located in a compartment used by Mar-Det to store our gear. Said wire racks connected the bridge to the engine rooms.
Does anyone else remember this fire?
