I'd suggest trying two avenues. Contact your NY DMV and see if they can do a search by your name and address at the time to bring up an old registration with the VIN on it.
Also, try contacting the insurance company you used back then for the car. Once you verify your name with them, they should be able to pull up you old info with the VIN of the car.
