NEGHL
Any thoughts on the first week of NEGHL play at U-16 or U-19 levels? |

Our refs this week did not enforce new rules.....we'll have to wait and see next week....I'm sure it's going to be different every week....We played the under 16 level. |

The refs at our game did not use the stricter enforcement either. They didn't even call icing for most of game |

There are no "NEW" rules. This was not a rule change year for USA Hockey if you compare your rule book to last years rule book they are identical. What is allowed each year is a change in emphasis on how rules are applied. You obviously did not pay attention to the video and associated write-up, or did not look at it at all. Because Hockey players have been allowed to clutch and grab, poke, hook, stick, obstruct and in general slow down the game for so many years this will be a difficult transition and many players and parents alike will not have an easy transition. The teams that will benefit will be fast skating and well skilled, Polar Bears, Assabet should see double digit scores. |

TO 14Coach: Obviously-----Your a know it all.....We did not have enforcement of the old rules...(how is that) I did see the video and was at the development camp.... I know what the refs should be calling and they were not called... I was not complaining it was just a statement - so go coach your team. I sure you'll win by double digits. |

Isn't not being allowed to ice the puck on the power play a new rule? |

Yes, but I am referring to full strength situations. Pucks shot just over blue line all the way to opposite end, no icing. Refs must have had lunch dates |

OOPS...I should have said "on the penalty kill", just wanted to clarify that before someone jumped down my throat! |

The title of the usa hockey video is NEW STANDARD OF PLAY (if you want to be technical - like some people obviously do). In our girls game we did not use the NEW rule of no icing on a penalty kill. I don't know why but there was some discussion amongst the refs and coaches and we did not play that way. |

anon - Sorry to ruin your day.... if you don't want to look like an idiot don't write like one.As for the icing the puck when short handed rule discussion, this is a pilot study being performed by MASS Hockey. It was done last year in some of the MASS Leagues but not across the board. You will not find this in your USA Hockey Rule book. |

So can your coach discuss it with the refs beforehand and have them not participate in this little experiment? |

Not if you play in any Mass Hockey League including girls. Page 32 of the Massachusetts Hockey 33rd Annual Guide (available online) states: "Massachusetts Hockey last season piloted for USA Hockey, in a couple of leagues, a change in the playing rules to not allow short handed teams to ice the Puck. To gain further knowledge the Massachusetts Hockey Board of Directors voted to extend that pilot for the 2006-2007 season in ALL games played in Massachusetts." Also a at the bottom of the main page for Mass hockey there is a link to a single page rules update with regards to the Pilot that clearly states ALL PLAY IN MASS. |

I thought I heard in those leagues they were also trying to keep the player who committed the penalty in the box when a goal was scored, the team committing the infraction would return to full strenght and that player would remain in the box till the first whistle after the original penalty would have been over. Am I imagining things or was was that not included in the pilot? I think I read the intention was to make the person less likely to intentionally take the penalty? |

This was not part of the pilot. Yes I have heard that a league has imposed this rule and leagues are allowed to modify the rules within the framework of USA Hockey guidelines. For example MASS Hockey for a while required a more strict high sticking penalty that included a tacked on misconduct. The intent of manipulating the severity is up to interpretation. The purpose behind the icing rule and other rule interpretations is intended to increase the amount of time and speed that the kids play the game. |

I believe that's what they do in High School. The offender remains in the box until after the penalty expires. |

14Coach: You speculated that the new standards might give a lot of double-digit wins to teams like Assabet and the Polar Bears. I have a couple of problems with that. First, it doesn't take into account that the new standards giving them a better forecheck also means their traditional backchecking and breakout systems will be under the same standards. Second, teams with the overall speed of AV or the Polar Bears weren't particularly hobbled by interference on their forecheck under the old standards. We'll see who the season goes, but neither the AV or the Polar Bear players are getting any more advantage individually than fast players on every team. The new standards will be freeing up the fast players on all the teams. Granted AV and the Bears have a lot of fast players per team, but not every fast player. All this is moot unless the new standards are applied during the whole season and in every rink the NEGHL plays in. I didn't see it applied in the 3 major summer tournaments I watched and didn't see it this past weekend either. |

We played neghl and the new standards were not enforced..nor was the icing...you can recite the rules out of the book, but it doesn't do any good unless their being enforced. |

Another rule change is the delay of game penalty for the puck going into the stands from the defensive zone. I saw this a few times at the U22 camp, and have already seen it once during a Bantam game.(though in that case it went into the netting above the sideboards in the D zone) |
