It's all Greek to me!

So, after hammering the Greek cyphertext with dictionary word searches and failing miserably, I started doing some investigation of Greek dictionaries, thinking the plaintext might be in Greek. It's apparently even simpler than that, as many of the words translate almost directly from Greek to English. I got a good chunk of it, which so far appears to be more red herrings and the usual deadends (to be expected I suppose), but made some requests for further translation aid. Here's what I got so far:

ΜΗΕΣΠΗ ΤΩΔΕ
ΤΩ ΝΗΜΑΤΙ
ΜΗΕΣΠΗ ΤΩΔΕ
ΤΩ ΙΧΝΕΙ
ΡΕΓΓΑ ΦΟΙΝΙΞ
ΑΔΙΕΞΟΔΟΣ

_____? this
here (sole/underside)?
herring phoenix (deadlock/deadend)

Nothing like seeing "HERRING" and "DEADEND" as direct word translations... Oh well, enough time wasted for now. I'm betting the Egyptian text is the same, and can be more-or-less directly translated using known letter and word substitutions.

Re: It's all Greek to me!

Agreed.....back in the day I had translated the Greek tombstones and the chinese letters. Both indicated red herring or dead end, which to me was a clear sign that this was not the way to go.

It confirmed to me that it was likely much simpler as indicated in clues in the book, "The path is simple, but it is well concealed." Anyway, I think it to be consistent with the Roman Numeral theory....ancient Rome.....where I's equal ones and vice versa.

By the way, many will disagree with this, but every single clue I ever unraveled in the Fish chapter gave the same message, "Red Herring". I eventually had to conclude that this chapter is not meant to be used to solve the puzzle.
