Tarrot card "DM for JS"

Just thinking out loud here, but perhaps the "reveral" clue (move forward -> go back) suggest NOT that DM susbstitutes directly for JS, but that MD does.

I always wondered why the need to suggest a substitution cypher using 2 cyphertext characters and their 2 plaintext counterparts - other than to say this definitely is a subsitution ("D for J", "M for S" would be a pretty small puzzle/clue).

So perhaps the substitution to be used on something else was as follows:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
VUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBAZYXW

A nice property of this sort of substitution is that the inverse function is identical to the original one - MIRRORED. Thus moving forward (encrypting) is the same as going back (decrypting), in that they use the same function.

Boy, I don't know about you, but this feels to me like a much more convincing piece of the overall puzzle than "IZZARD" (tho izzard sure has a Dr. K ring/feel to it).

I think I'm going to persue the statistics route to try and understand more clearly how probable an accidental translation is, given the card shuffle and "PAM" keying...

Re: Tarrot card "DM for JS"

I like your line of thinking on DM for JS. Different from mine, but logical.

I can tell you that I have come up with the utility of this clue, that its implementation is not unlike that used for deciphering the license plate and that there are several confirmation clues supporting the conclusions.

But first, tell me about the man who is also a bird.

Re: Tarrot card "DM for JS"

He will try to trick you, and make the truth seem false.

The path is SIMPLE.
The path is (a) CONCEALED WELL.

Hahaha! And you probably thought I was going to tell you that he was Shiprock, Icarus, or perhaps the Egyptian bird-man of death Ba - buried with the golden horse, right?

At any rate, things that never made sense to me about the book puzzle:
1. Always figured that the italicized text meant something.
2. Figured that there was a code involving certain words/letters which could be found given a chapter & paragraph & word & letter # (much like the 1st paragraph, 1st word, 1st letter of each chapter spelled "IGNORE STATE SHAPES").
3. Or similarly, a code involving certain letters of each chapter title.
4. Figured "THE MAN WITH BLACK GLOVES" had some kind of anagram or similar coding (Anagrams are a tough beast to crack - you can pretty much take a handful of random letters including sufficient vowels, and find literally 1000's of legitimate anagrammed words that can be made from them).

Re: Tarrot card "DM for JS"

Okay....the answer to the riddle, "the man who is also a bird"

1. Isolate sentences that contain the word man
2. Find sentences with both bird and man
3. Note the sentence (I think it's last chapter), "He was the watchman who had watched through the night."
4. Note that this sentence refers to the owl, therefore conclude that the man who is also a bird is an owl (watchman/owl).
5. Now continue with the investigation by dissecting this sentence to take a literal meaning in a different way, "....the watchman who...." referring the watchman/owl as being called "who"
6. Find sentences with "who" and "man" or "bird"
7. Realize that there is only one such sentence in the 9th chapter called "Mr Maps". In that chapter there is a sentence that references, "....and who was to say....." If you read this sentence in the context of that paragraph you will know that "who" is referring to Mr. Maps.
8. Conclude that the man who is also a bird is the owl who is Mr. Maps.
9. Confirm this with supporting clues throughout the Mr Maps chapter which describe his physical character, such as 'hopping around' and 'very short'
10. Also note use of the word bamboo in conjunction with hidden to infer "bamboozle" which connects to what we know, "that he will lie with the truth."

Don't know about you, but I am convinced. Further ties, once you have drawn this conclusion, will allow you to see that he is also the Man with Black Gloves.
