Hayes, Stephen J. Jr. BALLSTON SPA Stephen J. Hayes Jr., 65, of Rock City Road, died suddenly Wednesday at his home, from natural causes. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., January 6, 1943, son of the late Stephen and Agnes Beck Hayes, he grew up and was educated in Brooklyn. After high school, Steve joined the US Navy, and served aboard the USS Kitty Hawk (CVA63) during the Vietnam War. After his service, Steve and his wife moved to Long Island, and he worked for Publishers Clearinghouse for a number of years, before moving to the Capital District, first to Stillwater and later to Ballston Spa. A computer programmer for the Albany County BOCES for 20 years, he retired in 2006. Steve enjoyed creating models, such as planes, boats and doll houses, and had a first class model train set collection. He loved the north country, and would take leisurely country drives, not set on any destination, taking in the scenic beauty of our area. Sadly, he was predeceased by his wife of 26 years, Catherine Elbert Hayes, who died in 1990, and his son, Shawn C. Hayes, who died in 2000. Survivors include his two daughters, Lauren Ramundo of Clifton Park and Jennifer and Robert Wasielewski Jr. of Schaghticoke; grandchildren, Kathryn, Robert III, Shauna, Jacob, Joshua, Theresa and Shaun Jr.; a brother, Peter Hayes of New Milford, Conn.; and a sister, Marjorie Harkin of Jackson, N.J. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville. Calling hours at the funeral home on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. Burial with military honors on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Steve's favorite charity: Father Flanagan's Boy Town, Boys Town, Nebraska 68010.
