Help starting a Cattle Ranch
Hello, I’m a young man 32 wanting to get started in the cattle business; I live in McKinney Texas. I have been gathering all the information I can and talking with people, I have yet to find a black cattle rancher to talk with. I found they have a young farmer’s loan through FSA which I hope will help. The only problem I have is it’s been over 10yrs since I have help take care of cows so that’s a short fall in their eyes has far as giving me a loan. I don’t have a lot of money to get started so I was wondering what kinds of programs are available for young black framers and ranchers. Thanks for all your help Corey Robinson |

Re: Help starting a Cattle Ranch
With very little money, I would suggest you start out going to the dairyies and purchase new born bulls. You may have to bottle feed them , but it is a start. or purchase 1 heifer at a time until you have six or seven from individuals and then one bull. It seems like a lot of work, but that is what ranching is all about. Good luck in your venture but you must be true too it and stick with it to be successful. But you can do it my daddy was living proof of it prior to his death 10 years ago. Sincerely Shawn Holmes |

Re: Help starting a Cattle Ranch
Corey, just as Shawn mentioned you can really start your herd on a little money. Me and my wife on our weekly paychecks would look around our area and buy maybe 2 heifers at a time right around $600 sometimes. During another month or so we would buy one or two more, to make the story short in about 2 years we had close to twenty young heifers age of 2 or a little over. So a little money will get you started and a little time...Good Luck in your venture. Sig.
