YOUNG GRANDPARENTS
Hi, I have two wonderful grandsons who are 18 months and 15 months old. My two oldest daughters are their mothers (my youngest daughter has no children, thankfully).
I would love to throw out the idea that we young grandparents need support, too. Even if it's just someplace to go have coffee and talk about the unique challenges we face in caring for our teenaged children as well as helping them learn to care for their infants.
We face a number of very complicated obstacles, not the least of which being Medicaid, child care issues and subsidies, school attendance and grades, after-school jobs and transportation for the minor moms, and getting the moms ready for independence when they turn 18 (or 20 or whatever our goals are).
We are the ones on the front lines of this phenomenon, the ones who have to face having an infant in the house after so many years of raising older children, the ones who have to deal with doctors refusing to disclose things even as simple as appointment dates because of HIPAA (even when we explain that we are the only transportation for our grandchildren!!).
We are the ones who have to help our children learn to be parents, as well as to get them ready for life on their own after high school - whether they go to college or stay local, they need to begin life independent of the parents at some point.
I am in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area and would more than welcome group meetings that could help us work with our children as they transition into adulthood with the added responsibilities they take on, when they become parents.
