Rachel and The Crane

Hi everyone, I used to spend my time driving cranes for a living, and wrote this poem about it, (I might have stole a bit from our 'ol mate Banjo!)

RACHEL AND THE CRANE….(a true tale)

‘Twas Rachel from Mount Gambier,
Who caught the construction craze,
She turned away those “girly clothes”,
That served her many days.

She dressed herself in King Gee shorts,
Resplendent to be seen.
And went off to site to sit herself,
In a shiny new machine.

And as she turned the engine on ,
With air of lordly pride,
The grinning boilermaker said,
She’s a bloody sheila “can she drive?”

See here old men said Rachel,
From coal to milk factories,
From pulp mills to uranium mines,
There’s none can drive like me!

Work platforms, forklifts, loaders too,
I drive ‘em all you know,
Although I’m not the one to talk
I hate a girl that blows.

But cranes they are my special gift,
My chiefest sole delight.
Just ask the boys I’ve worked with,
They’ll tell ya that I’m right!

There’s no 50 tonner I can’t drive,
Built of strudy steel.
There’s no other cranie out there,
That has such sex appeal.

But as I sit my jib up high,
I’ll lift your 10 tonne load.
Then ride this here new Franna crane
To the next lift down the road.

‘Twas Rachel from Mount Gambier
Showed the men a thing or two.
From job to job she served them well,
There was nothing she couldn’t do.

She’d lift loads that scared the men,
And kept her crane so clean.
She learnt that she could win the hearts,
Of men both hard and mean.

So they learnt to love the “sheila,”
For changing all their views,
On crane drivers being only blokes,
When they could be women too.

And she learnt to love the fellas,
For the mateship they had shown,
And for letting her into their world,
And for how much they had grown.

And when she had to leave the job,
The men they were so sad,
‘Twas Rachel from Mount Gambier
Cutest cranie they ever had.

Isn't that what Mulga Bill said as he went into the Deadman's Creek. Or was it just a straight Heeeeeeeeyy.
