Message:   Yesterday I spoke with a couple of members of the club who informed me that several of our flying members have elected to sell their aircraft. The primary reason given was the misconception that because the "exemption date" (Jan. 31st.,2007 has elapsed that their "ultralight" experience is no longer applicable towards the necessary requirements for a Sport Pilot certificate.
Wrong!!!!! If you were/are registered with one of the FAA recognized organizations (ie. EAA.USUA,ASC),your instructor was/is registered, and the aircraft was/is registered, ANY ultralight time can be utilized towards meeting the requirements of sport pilot. You must receive a certified letter from the recognized organization certifying your experience.
So what was the Jan. 31st. deadline about? Prior to Jan. 31st, 2007 if you had registered your ultralight experience (dual and solo, cross country) and recieved a certified letter from one of the three aforementioned organizations, you were not required to gain a FAA Certified Flight Instructor's (CFI's) endorsement to take either the Sport Pilot Written Exam or the Sport Pilot Practical Exam. Also, the requirement that you must recieve a minimum of 3 hours of instruction for the checkride within 60 days of the exam was waived.
Now that the "exemtion period" has expired your registered ultralight experience still counts. But 1.You'll need ground instruction and and endorsemnt to take the written.
2. You'll need flight instruction (min of three hours)
within 60 days by a FAA CFI to prepare for the practical test and his/her endorsement to take the test.
Frankly, a very low percentage of the "exemption pilots" that took the flight test without CFI instruction were successfull.

Many of our members have put a great amount of time and love into their flying and their airplanes. It would be a shame to for them to give it up because of a misinterpretation of information.

ANY questions concerning the requirements for Sport Pilot are welcome. Just call me @ 309-368-1651 and I'll do my best to answer you.

PS: I'm in the process of putting together a formal ground school to prepare the participants to take the Sport or Private Pilot written exam. Details to follow shortly. (If you complete the ground school successfully, I'll endorse you to take the written.)
