Honestly, I think the YAOI writers pair those two so much not just because they're such "close" friends, but because they are exact opposites.
The main reason YAOI writers,(who just happen to be mostly female  ),want to focus completely on the male characters with no females in the way. (Just like the male girl+girl fantasy anime/hentia etc.)
It actually is a little funny, because it's so impossible.
