Somalia govt. faces another defection of troops
Tue. December 19, 2006 05:13 pm. Mohamed Abdi Farah (SomaliNet) Dozens more government troops were reported on Tuesday to have abandoned their barracks near Baidoa city, the base of the transitional federal government – this is another severe blow to the beleaguered government in Somalia – amid mounting tensions over possible all-out-war between powerful Islamic Courts Union and Ethiopia troops that massed several parts of Somalia territory. Sources are confirming that around 50 soldiers have defected from the government and reached in Bur-Dhubo town of Gedo region in south of Somalia, where they received hospitality from residents. Another 30 defected soldiers have already been in Bur Dhubo. Some of the defectors who were interviewed said after facing life difficulties they had decided to escape and desert the camp. No word yet from the government in Biadoa on the defected troops. The defectors were armed with automatic weapons and were among the recruits that have been trained at Manas military camp, outskirt of Baidoa. This puts the number of defected troops to 850 soldiers since the TFG relocated in Baidoa in early this year. Baidoa, is the provincial capital of Bay region in southwest of Somalia and 240km to the capital of Mogadishu where it is controlled by the Islamic Courts who extended their power to central and southern of Somalia. http://www.somalinet.com/news/world/Somalia/5949 |
