A must read letter from Addis Ababa

Letter to the Diaspora

By: Solomon Daniel,
Addis Ababa University

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 12 million refugees worldwide, who have fled their homes because of fear of war, natural disaster, or persecution as a result of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion. By and large, refugees leave their countries either on foot crossing treacherous borders or by boat across unchartered waters. Very seldom do refugees travel overseas carrying their native countries passport on board an airplane through their countries airports.

In United States and Europe there are many Ethiopians who migrated in the early eighties as refugees running away from the summary execution and torture chambers of the Derg. There also those who legally flew out of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, waving their Ethiopian Passport, during the Emperor, the Derg and the current government. They migrated for educational, medical or social visits. Later these immigrants sought asylum in the US and Europe for various reasons, that nonetheless may amount to fear of returning back home.

Among the 12 million real refugees around the world, there is none other than Ethiopians who confuse their hate for the ruling regime with the country. Their apprehension to the political format in Ethiopia transcends to their dread to the country. Their hate to the ruling party translates to detestation to any good news about Ethiopia. Their hostility to the incumbent party results in their alliance with the historical enemies of the country. There is no immigrant community in history who collectively campaign against their own country and ally with historical enemies of their native land.

Few years back the rhetoric of the vocal Diaspora about the illegal secession of Eritrea and later the willful giving in of our sea outlets were the drumbeats of Ethiopian nationalism and a slogan against the current regime. The position that EPRP took against the invasion of Somalia during the Derg was detested by many as unpatriotic.

Today, among the vocal Diaspora, we have all sorts of Somalia's UIC apologists and those who are trying to forge alliance with Eritrea's EPLF. We all hear about a cliché the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." EPLF fought against Ethiopia during the Emperor, the Derg and even now against EPRDF after being granted their "independence" on a silver platter. Thus EPLF's animosity has always been against Ethiopia. If indeed EPLF is the enemy of your enemy, logic dictates that the enemy of the vocal Diaspora is Ethiopia.

There has never been such vulgar rhetoric targeted at our country as captured and evidenced by every blog and tabloid website. Some websites address Ethiopian Armed Forces as "Meles' Army." Incase you folks do not know the army is about 300,000 and all are not from Adwa. The army has voluntarily attracted many unfortunate young folks from every village in Ethiopia as a means to make a living. It is the same thing as Senator John Kerry of Massachussets said about American soldiers in Iraq. As he said, they are not Bush's soldiers; they are the poor ones who did not make it to college.

Some feature the portrait of Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, the current leader of the UIC and the x-leader of Al Ithad Al Islamia, on their front pages as some kind of a messiah. This exposes to the rest of the world the decadence, wantonness and ugliness of Ethiopian politics by people who claim to be more Ethiopian than others. It is no surprise that the UN, USA, EU and the world community are oblivious to all marches, petitions and rallies of such a saboteur crowd against its own native country.

A principled opposition is one thing but a blind hatred towards anything good about the country and blind support for any threat against the country is unwarranted. We all have some misgiving about the incumbent party. There are 77 million people of us, here in Ethiopia, who have been trying to lead our lives under this one and the two previous regimes. We have no luxury of lamenting on our on misfortunes as some of you have in far away lands. We live it and we try to make the best of it. Millions of us chose to stay in our country, even under adverse conditions and refused to leave our mother land. We love our country with all its misery and we live in it for it is the only country we have.

If a Jihadist bombs a mini bus it kills one of our brothers, sisters, sons and daughters that we directly relate to. If the government arrests a fellow teacher, trader, journalist or student we are the ones who support the family, line up in a long prison queue, every weekend to supply food and clothing. If some one gets killed in a riot, we are the ones who mourn with the immediate family, take care of funeral services and attend to other IDIR matters. So we say to all of you stop playing politics with our lives.

We may not like the incumbent party but we love our only country that we live in, no matter how destitute it is. Most of all we thrive and aspire to live in peace and harmony and we pray every day for it. We try to create harmony and friendship with our neighbors in our communities regardless of religion, creed and ethnicity. In case you folks abroad have not notices we thank god it is not as bad as you say about our country. Yes there are problems in some areas and we try to use our old tradition of Shimglina to calm conflicts and solve some community problems. Relatively speaking, despite all the problems we have in our wretched existence, compared to other countries we would like to believe that we live in peace and harmony.

We want to tell you that we would like to hear some good things about our country once in a while. Even if we have serious problems with the ruling party, we believe it is our problem, Ethiopia's problem, which needs to be solved by Ethiopians. We do not like it when you in Diaspora defame the whole country and ally with Ethiopia's historical enemies. We would like to criticize the incumbent party in our country with our own voices no matter how stumpy the voice is. We do not like it when you use Shabia Radio and TV to blast the whole country in the name of opposition.

We advise you to learn from Congressman Charles Rangel, an opposition Democrat who represents Harlem and a harsh Bush critic, who was not impressed by Chavez's rhetoric. Speaking of the remarks of President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, he was quoted as "You don't come into my country, you don't come into my congressional district and you don't condemn my president. If there's any criticism of President Bush, it should be restricted to Americans whether they voted for him or not," He also said. "I just want to make it abundantly clear to Hugo Chavez or any other president -- don't come to the United States and think because we have problems with our president, that any foreigner can come to our country and not think that Americans do not feel offended when you offend our Executive Branch."

The lesson here is we Ethiopian should be the harshest critic of the Incumbent party but we should be cognizant of the fact that we can have only one ruling party at the helm of the state at a time. Until we vote it out of office, we are not amused when any foreign agent, especially that of Shaebia and UIC apologist blast the country, the people and the state. We are not impressed with your press releases and outlandish proposals either.

Some of you distance yourselves from the Somali border conflict and claim that it is not your responsibility but that of the ruling party. We hate to tell you that you the Diaspora have never been responsible for anything that has ever happened here in Ethiopia. We Ethiopians loath war more than anyone in the world. We want to live in peace with all our neighbors. We also want diplomacy and dialogue to take precedence to resolve conflicts. But when its historical enemies gang up against our country we worry a lot.

Some of you wish us not to celebrate the coming Millennium. You want to wait until you liberate us to celebrate such a milestone. We hate to tell you the obvious that the millennium come once in 1000 years. We are afraid we can't wait that long and neither can you. According to you, your suggestions amount to holding off celebrating every conceivable holiday such as Genna, Eid, Fasika, Mawlid, Timket, Arrafah and so on until and unless you folks come to power.

With or without your crocodile tears we Ethiopians have been struggling to bring changes in our country, somehow and someway aspirating for a salvation and thriving to create bright future for our children.

ab

i don't think all diaspora boycotted the millenium...
you have to understand that only 3%of ethiopians live in diaspora.

out of this 3%, around 30% are children, 40% don't care about politics, they just want to improve their life.

so the remaining vocal 30% are politically active, but even they are divided between Aeup, UEDF, medhin, olf, and many other parties...out of this division very small percent of them read the article about the boycotting of the Milliniem.

so Mr. Ab, take it easy!!! ethiopian airlines tickets are most expensive than ever! tourism will be find. our country is not going to be harmed by such a small very small minority, even if they beg the WHITEHOUSE day and night.

You expressed your Idea in a very nice way, but please dont represent the whole country and say we do not like it rather say I do not like it.

I am surprised when u say dont use shabia TV or radio but u are listening woyanie radio and TV bc u dont have any other alternative. People in the diaspora use shabia radio and TV bc they dont have other alternative. these two are enemies of the ethiopian people who lived and worked for several years togther for their own succes. Then woyanie told us that shabia is ur enemie when they quarrale. and we said in our hearts that they were our enemies what is new now.The only difference is they were ur friends, taking key positions since the woyanies dont trust us. So please the diaspora do not have any other alternatives.

Re: A must read letter from Addis Ababa

Dear writer/ Solomon Aka..et al,

Your notions of Diaspora Ethiopians hate their country including Ethiopia's politicians all in all is far from truth. Ethiopians love their country be at home or while living in exile.

The second error you injected in your letter has to do with only Ethiopian diasporas who hate their country's regime. There are many exilee here in USA who protest injustices of their perspective nations.

To quote a few, Chinese, Cubans, Iraqi, the list goes on..

Ethiopians are no exceptions in vowing to their home land of origins politically, economically for they want only the best for their countrymen.

Our distest also comes from the above and more of the evils we easily can finger point to than those muzzled at home. Trust me you little bros, and sistas are muzzled to unthinkable states of affairs.

Since we departed home we have seen what true democracy looks like; what civilization mean to ordinary citizens as well.

Ethiopia is no where in a right track to catch up with fast growing democratic movements, nor safeguarding its citizens rights at all. Ethiopia is a light years behind when the word democracy is used in its true sense.

Therefore, our love for our country remains sold, while our distest for criminal, terrorist regimes are out of their deeds. We are blessed to be outside of Ethiopia as well as keen to critique such barberisms being carried against peace-loving Ethiopian people.

For whatever reason we manage to detangle ourselves to be caught with far worse butchters webs of crimes in last 40 years. The puzzles of why? is mine and yours as well. We need to struggle to be free of harassements, belittlings, mass murders; extrajudicial killings current regime often resorts to remain at the helm of power. Ethiopians don't deserve; infact no nation deserves to abide by EPRDF'S aparthied policies.

As we know Ethiopians have tenacity to overcome fascism in its all colors. This current brand of it has arrived loaded on donkeys brought to our door steps without our consents.

Therefore, its the obligations of all Ethiopians to call all fascisms by its true names and stand tall.

You and many of concerned Ethiopians need to aliegn on the side of the Ethiopian people and struggle for better tomorrow against all fascist regime that stumle and swing at the innocents to make itself look better while not.

Woyanes are far worse Ethiopians have seen and lived under. They''ve done the unthinkable human degradation under the pseudo name of law; while breaking each and every law man have seen since the beginnings. To kill innocent Ethiopians they even whip up brand new laws that fits only beasts.

Wake up Ethiopians at home of in exile, yehich Bakela kaderech attiqoretemimmna.

“Woyane is dead, long live Woyane.”

I am an Ethiopian living in Addis Ababa. I am greatly surprised by a person from the Addis Ababa University wrote this letter using Solomon Daniel as a pen or horse name.

The so called Solomon accuses Ethiopians in the Diaspora among other things as people:

1. Who confuse their hate for the ruling regime with the country
2. Whose apprehension to the political format in Ethiopia transcends to their dread to the country.
3. Whose hostility to the incumbent party results in their alliance with the historical enemies of the country
4. Who collectively campaign against their own country and ally with historical enemies of their native land.
5. Somalia's UIC apologists and those who are trying to forge alliance with Eritrea's EPLF.
6. Some websites address Ethiopian Armed Forces as "Meles' Army
7. Some feature the portrait of Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, the current leader of the UIC and the x-leader of Al Ithad Al Islamia, on their front pages as some kind of a messiah
8. Who claim to be more Ethiopian than others.
9. Who defame the whole country and ally with Ethiopia's historical enemies
10. Who wish us not to celebrate the coming Millennium

My responses to Solomon are:

1. Solomon is the one who confuses his love to the ruling party with his hate to Ethiopia. Woyane is the antithesis of Ethiopia. If you love the ruling party why do not you say so rather than going around the 12 million refugees?
2. Solomon is the one whose understanding of Ethiopian politics is far below the knowledge that Addis Ababa University should have equipped him with
3. Solomon is the one whose hate to Ethiopia results in his alliance or sympathy to TPLF criminal thugs and Ethiopia’s worst Enemies walking in human forms
4. Solomon is the one who campaigns against Ethiopia with TPLF thugs who were created and nurtured by one of Ethiopia’s worst Historical enemy-Shabiyaa.
5. Solomon is the one who is Tigrai’s Woyane apologist and the one who is trying to forge alliance with TPLF
6. Solomon the only person who can address Ethiopian armed forces as “Ethiopian” Army. If the army is primarily exiting to protect Woayne’s interest it is “Woayne Army” not Ethiopian army. Do not find parallel in America or elsewhere. The American Army is not servicing Bush. It is serving American interest. That is why it is an American Army.
7. Solomon’s letter is nothing but an application to be a member of TPLF to feature the portrait of Zenawi as his Messiah from Jihadists.
8. It is Solomon who claims to be more Ethiopian than others. In his letter he used the word “WE” without representation. Who gave you the right to speak on my behalf?
9. Solomon is the one who decorate Woyane and ally with the worst enemy of Ethiopia-TPLF.
10. Solomon is the one who want to celebrate the Millennium with TPLF.

I really do not think Solomon has gone through the University. May be the University might have gone through him!!! Simply Solomon’s letter is manifests the political crisis this guy is in, the inferiority complex he has, the hatred he developed for Ethiopians in the Diaspora, the love he has for dictator, etc. Simply Solomon’s letter is “Woyane is dead, long live Woyane.”
I Love Ethiopia

Re: A must read letter from Addis Ababa

AP/BBC

If the people hate their won government it tells you that the government doesn’t represent their interest. It also tells that the governmet is isolated from the people. The only solution is bring another governing body. Government does not judge its people, people do.

Therefore if the government respects people’s choice it would have been wise to step down. People should choose their own government; it is not up to the government to force its rule upon the people. When this happens it not any more called governing it is called dictatorial.

When the government gets the hate sentiment of its people, if it was prudent, it would have been wise to solve the probelem rather than coming back with an attack or ways to try to divert their attention.

A government without the support of its people will never successed.

Woyanes will keep trying to come in many faces and names. It is the diehard TPLF who are dying to save their hated agent/government/Meles.

Now the whole world knows that Ethiopians hate their “won” government. The whole world also knows that Ethiopians are under a dictatorship.

It shows that Meles doesn't believe in Ethiopia and they don’t believe in him. Shame on Meles and the hate monger TPLF.

Re: A must read letter from Addis Ababa

At the 13th paragraph, the Woyane Solomon Haile said, which only proves he is a big fat kiletam liar. He said:

"Until we vote it[Woyane] out of office, we are not amused when any foreign agent, especially that of Shaebia and UIC apologist blast the country, the people and the state."

Solomon Haile, what in the world are you talking about? Ethiopians on May 15th, 2005 unequivocally voted Woyane out of office and told it to go back to Dedebit, and Woyane refused, instead killing rampant, disappearing, jailing, harassing, torturing, and silencing the majority of all those who voted against it, 28 million or so Ethiopians.

What Ethiopian army are you talking about? There is no such thing as Ethiopian Defnse Forces but an Agasses force created by, nurtured by, and accountable to Meles Zenawi and Cohorts.

For Ethiopians Meles is the same as UIC, except that this guy "claims" Ethiopian despite workiing against Ethiopians for most of his life, inlcuding the last 15 years when he seized power, resulting with the landlocking of the country, the disbanding of the Etiopian Army, Navy, and Air Force and all the weapons, planes, ships sold to Shabia, or lost in Yemen because of threats for the former Ethiopian soldiers.

This is Meles' war, not Ethiopia's. While the UIC may in the long term pose a threat, for most Ethiopians Meles and cohorts are the most immediate threat for Ethiopia. Every opportunity should be used to see if Meles could be removed from the back of Ethiopians.

Re: A must read letter from Addis Ababa

If you paid attention to what you have posted, the article answers its own question. Ethiopians hate their own government. That means the government is not approved by the people therefore it is illegal. That is why people hate it. It does not represent them.

Have you learned that the more Woyane/Meles insists to glue to power the more Mengistu is missed? All those people who were happy to see Mengistu gone are now prefer Mengistu than Meles.

Meles is the worst dictator and liar. He cheated everybody for few years looking like a democratic government but now he has shaded his skin. Just like his look he is a snake. This illegal government is killing, harassing and etc… while insisting to glue to power for more than Mengistu.

And you wonder why Ethiopians hate “their own government”? It is because they do not consider it as their government. He is a divider. He hates to see Ethiopia united. Ethiopians found Meles to be crazy for power to kill, imprison, torturer loot and cause all kinds of calamities to Ethiopia.

Re: A must read letter from Addis Ababa

Taye,

I am sorry sir, you didn't get the joke. You have to be from that part of ethiopia to understand the way they state in short and concise way.
Here is another one:
"Lizitsegebe Tiyit Nezitemeye 'njera" or in amharic "letegebe tiyit leterabe injera". Thats the modus operandi before TPLF.

Welkayit being the second province that TPLF controlled from Derg, gives it an advantage over a lot of other provinces. Tree shed school was first started and also tegadalay teachers were common.

Unlike Derg, Isayas and now ICU, Weyannie never militarized under age children. It always protected them, so even the Tegadalay made sure he came to the tree shed with changed cloths if he had, but for sure came unarmed, even when it was risky.

We have seen what CUD wants to do with children. They were sending elementary school children either to throw stones at tigre or to do sidib at federal police from Gambella (caught on tape).

Isn't it ER that was manufacturing news of elementary school children valiantly fighting Agazzee, the elite of the elite military who is second to none in the continent.

Its caught on tape where a CUD cadre was sending children to despense sidib on a federal police officer from Gambella State, and the CUD was waiting with a camera to take picture if the police officer reacted in anger on the children. The police officer was smart to realize the setup and go and capture the coward CUD with his camera.

You trigger happy villains are gunning down Gambella’s, Oromo’s, Harere’s and many other Ethiopian’s children for refusing to stand with you on many nationalistic issues because you are bands, the habitual liars and beggars on the planet.

Instead of living in denial, looted wealth and fabricated lies (Woyane’s character) try to earn your living the honest and responsible way. Help yourself by gaining some senses and by coming out of your ignorance.
