Hello fellow foot itchers!

This is great! I cant believe I just found this website after over a year of researching this dreadful allergy. In fact, I spent SO much time researching, that I had to put it aside from frustration!!! How can someone manufacture shoes and NOT know what holds them together!?!?!

Anyway - I noticed Janine wrote - we have been in contact previously. It is nice to see that there are "others" out there - and I have always said that I was going to write to Oprah about this - as it is ridiculous.

I am happy to share the info I have received - but I have it at home, tucked away in a 3" 3 Ring Binder.... so, soon to come....

A bit of what I have found is:
a) Most people have no clue about their shoes. Basically, stay away from the mass made, "designer" trendy shoes, made in China. Therefore, you will not be buying shoes with a coupon from Macys.
b) I "heard" that PTBP glues are BANNED in Europe. Could this be true?
c) Cole Haan can track shoes to the originating factory. I e-mail them with the ones I like, and they write back the ones that are ok, or not ok. I have been lucky so far, and have my very own Cole Haan Collection in my closet, and on my credit cards...
d) I just learned that NAOT shoes are PTBP free - and VERY comfortable!
e) Taryn Rose shoes are very interested in learning more about this allergy and helping out.
f) The guy from Cydwoq, however, is a rude a** and told me that he did not have time to look at the ingredients of the glues he uses. Couldnt care less. I wont buy the shoes if he is the last pair on earth.
g) Keen, Gabor, Think, Saucony, Adidas, & Naot are PTBP free - off the top of my head. Will consult the excel spreadsheet.....
e) Some companies will not respond to you, or say that they cannot guarantee because they are afraid of lawsuits....nice.
f) Nine West, Franco Sarto, & Miz Mooze are no nos.

Also - my recent reaction was from Miz Mooze. By far the most terrible reaction ever imagined. It lasted for over a year. Even when the hives "went away" they came back if my feet were warm in any shoe. Nothing got rid of the allergy. I finally went and did something called PUVA therapy. It is a light therapy where you take a pill that makes you photosensitive, and then you put your feet in a light box for a minute. It worked a bit, but the pill make you SO nauseus that I had to stop the treatments.
My feet are "better" but when they get warm, I always get an itch and take a Claritan - which seems to help a bit. But when this happens, I can still see the faint outline and discoloration of the hive that popped out over a year and a half ago. It just does not really go away!

So, I am going to start looking into herbal and natural rememdies. My Dr at Univ of SF is interested in this - but as most may know, the Dr's say to stay away, but have no real treatment, or advise for footwear.

To top it off, I may also be allergic to nylons - so that can trigger the reaction.

Anyway - I look forward to staying in touch with you all to help find a solution and get the word out there about what is coming in our shoes.

Thanks for reading!

Re: Hello fellow foot itchers!

Colleen,
First of all, I LOVE YOUR SUBJECT Title! It draws me right in. Sounds like you've done a lot of searching. I found FINN shoes, and they are formaldehyde free. I'm having trouble finding a really dressy shoe, but I don't do heals well. My son is getting married end of May, so I have a little time. If you find a brand that would do well for 'Mother of the Groom' dress, let me know!

and here's for itch free feet for you!

Re: Hello fellow foot itchers!

I just wanted to say that I found Cydwoq OK when I e-mailed them. I had a reply by return. They said that the leather was vegetable tanned, and the glue water based. Although they could not confirm that the glue was non PTBP-FR I took a chance. I am very allergic to this and pottassium Chromate. All I can say is that I now have three pairs and wear them constantly. I have had no reaction to them at all. To test this out I have been wearing them with no socks/tights for a week now and all is well.

Whilst talking about communication with companies the best yet is Chaco who gave unequivical information that there is no Chrome or PTBP-FR in any of their shoes. If only all manufacturers were the same. there are many who simply have not replied to my emails.

Finally, thanks to Amy for this site. When I discovered my allergies I did not know where to start looking - this site has been my saviour.
